'We found no reason to leave' Chief Application August

Stephen Russell By Stephen Russell, , Posted 31 Jul 2010

Why would you like to be chief?

I believe this is a rare opportunity to experience life on Vorovoro from a unique perspective and I think the role would enhance my time on the island. Having had some time to observe the present chief and discuss what’s required and expected it has appealed to me as an opportunity to learn more about the workings of the Island and the Tribewanted project.

What, other than your skills, makes you the right person for this role?

I’m ready and able to fulfill the responsibilities’ of the role and enjoy the experience of being chief. I’m calm, patient and make considered, timely decisions. I’ve found it rewarding to listen and absorb what Team Fiji and visiting Tribe members have shared in the last two weeks and the role of chief invites this interaction. I will enjoy contributing to the Island and project by carrying out the duties involved and will offer support and encouragement to the very capable team on site.

What would you like to achieve as chief?

I regard this project, and the island, as very well managed. If I can support and provide impetus to any current work in hand then all the better.

On a practical side there is a need to refurbish the pig pen and some and although there have been some grumbles about ‘cold’ weather of late I don’t fancy sharing my bunk with Samson. The pillows could use some new covers and the Hammock Society area could use some TLC (sorry gym members: you can go swim)

The month of August builds to the annual celebrations so there will be an extra workload to contribute to as we go into year 4.

As chief you will be given a small pot of money with which to leave your legacy. How will you spend it?

We may need some materials for the pig pen and with the remainder I would like to contribute to any current need(s) in the village and Team Fiji (exactly what I’ll take on advice from the on island team)

Tell us something interesting about yourself

I have quit my job to travel the globe with my wife Kate. Previously, I have been a project manager for several global corporate and franchised restaurant companies over the past 12 years. Maybe I could have continued in that vein for another 20 but I knew that would be no fun! So, it was time for 2(ish) year break and thankfully that led us to Vorovoro where we found no reason to leave.

The longer I stay here the more the atmosphere soaks into me. It can invigorate or relax. Either way the feeling is GOOD.

In one sentence, why should the tribe elect you as chief?

It’s a great opportunity and I’d honor the role with the respect it deserves.
