Feedback

Cally’s Andina “The mountains (and team) taught me a valuable lesson – life’s way too short and happiness and being yourself should be a given.”

Chris’ Andina “Friends, family as well as I were a bit wary about some of the activities involved on this trip. Namely things like the 200 meter ice climb at almost 80°, with no experience on a mountain ever. At no point did I or any if the other guys on the trip feel like we were in any sort of danger of getting hurt. We were so well taken care of. At the end of each long tiring day we had snacks and tea, coffee set out for us and shortly after that the 3 course meal was served. I’d go into more detail but you have to be surprised what you get to eat, I still can’t believe after 4 days in the mountains what I was eating.”

Pete’s Andina “So there I was, alone and clipped to an ice steak half way up a near vertical ice face on Yannapacha. The early morning sun had given way to cloud and the wind brought temperatures close to freezing. As I stared face first into the ice, I thought to myself how the hell did I ever end up here?”

Who can do this?

This trip is open to people of all abilities. The itinerary has been constructed so that those who have never even been above the snowline can learn what’s needed and then put it into practice in an incredible environment.

The 2 week trip is ideal for those who want to mountain experience but don’t want to push themselves higher than the snowline. While tough it requires a basic level of fitness and lots of enthusiasm! The horse riding would be for about 4 hrs a day and the rock climbing is on a local rock face so you can take it at your own pace. At no point on the treks or hikes would you carry anything more than a day pack (5 kgs etc.).

The 3 week option would require good fitness, but there is lots of time to build that up. Minimum fitness would be the ability to run 6 to 7 miles in under an hour. On this you will be carrying your own pack between camps (not on snow though) which could weigh from 15 to 20kgs.

What’s included in cost:

- Advice and support from Tribewanted before departure

- Tribewanted Representative with the group throughout the Challenge

- Meet and local orientation at Hotel in Lima

- Transport by Bus to and From Huaraz

- All accommodation on days stated in the itinerary

- All food on activities and treks mentioned

- Breakfast on rest days

- All technical equipment on the treks and climbs

- All guides are from the local villages to Huaraz

What’s not included?

- International Flights to Peru

- Personal Insurance

- Food outside activities and on rest days, apart from Breakfasts

- Personal spending money

Recommended Kit List (Huaraz is a trekking town so some of these things can be bought whilst there)

Hiking Boots

Water purifiers

Thick hiking socks (at least 3 pairs)

Lightweight trekking trousers (zip offs work well)

Thick Fleece

Waterproof jacket (combines well with the fleece when trekking and climbing)

Warm hat/beanie

Camelpack or Platypus drinking pouches (2 litre)

Gloves (a thin and a thick pair)

Sun cream /lip salve (at least Factor 25)

Rucksack (min 60 litre)

Selection of tops/t-shirts to trek in

Sunglasses (ideally polarised to protect against glare of the snow)

Selection of t-shirts and underwear

Sleeping Bag (at least a 3 season one)

Sleeping bag liner
Roll Mat or Therma-Rest (travel pillow as well for extra comfort)

Head Torch and spare batteries

Small Personal Medi kit (with plasters, blister protection, Savlon etc.)

Amount to budget extra for your Challenge:

Flights to Peru from the UK come to anywhere between £600 to £800 depending how well you look around. Insurance for this is likely to be around £100.

We recommend about £150 extra for you own personal spending. This will be for your own food away from activities (a good cheap meal in Huaraz can cost anywhere from £2.50 to £5).There is cheap internet and some good bars in Huaraz too. It’s unlikely that you would spend that much but it’s always better to budget a little more than less!

Lima

The hustling, bustling metropolis of Peru. Based on the coast this colonial city will be the meeting point of the group and a great chance to have some early orientation to Peru. Lima is well equipped with good facilities such as banks, internet as well as full of great venues to go and salsa. This will be the first and last point of the summer Challenge.

Huaraz (altitude: 3052m’s above sea level)

Home to Peru’s climbing community; Huaraz is a small but functional small town about 8hrs north of Lima by bus. Dwarfed by the spectacular mountain range of the Cordillera Blanca on all sides and overshadowed by the mighty Huascaran (Peru’s highest peak at a lofty 6768m’s). Huaraz has a population of roughly 100,000. This will be our base for the 2 to 3 weeks.

Horse Riding

An ideal and scenic way to begin your acclimitization in Huaraz. 2 days spent gently exploring the surrounding foothills of the Cordillera Blanca. Camping out under the stars after the first day and then heading back late the second.

Rock Climbing

We will visit some of the stunning nearby rock faces to practice and become used to some of the equipment that we’ll be using in the mountains. Being comfortable with your equipment is vital in mountaineering and this will be a great chance to re-familiarize ourselves with the basics, whilst also having a spectacular day out!

Lake Churup (4400ms)

One of the hidden gems of the Cordillera Blanca. Situated at 4400 tucked underneath Mount Churup this picturesque lake will be the focus of our first day trek to help with acclimatization and also begin to soak up some of the unbelievable Andean views. The trek will start in the village of Llupa, where Giles used to work, and then head up the 3hr or so path to the lake. Famous for its crystal blues and emerald greens, this lake is a real highlight of the area rarely taken in by the average trekker. On the way back down we may even be asked in for a cup of tea by one of the Llupinos (people from Llupa)!

Santa Cruz Trek

One of the most popular treks of the Cordillera Blanca, this 3 to 4 day hike covers about 45 km and altitudes ranging from 3,000 to 4,800m. The trek goes through dynamic terrain, including flower-filled meadows and glacier-fed turquoise lakes. The trail is also very well maintained, with campsites and toilets along the way. Along the way there’ll be the chance (weather depending as always) to catch a glimpse of Alpamayo which UNESCO declared the ‘most beautiful mountain in the world.’

Mt. Pisco (5752m’s) and Yanapaccha (5460m’s)

The goal of all our training! These two peaks will offer the perfect opportunity to put all our skils, training and acclimitization into practice. This 7 day trek and climb will take us up 2 of the Codillera’s most scenic peaks. Whilst climbing both we’ll be presented with panaromic views of the surrounding Cordillera Blanca including Huascaran (Peru’s highest peak). Also there’ll be an array of stunning glacial lakes (such as Lake 69, see photos) to take in and take in the stunning Andean sunrises and sunsets that so characterise climbing in this part of the world at this time of year.

Background

Back in 2001 Ben and his family went trekking in this incredible area and met Damian Aurelio Vargas as their guide. After spending quality time together and swapping life stories it emerged that there was an opportunity to help in the surrounding area in Damian’s maternal village of Llupa. Ben was working for Madventurer at the time and saw it as a great fit. So in 2003 Giles Dawnay (Jale) went out and ran Mad’s first ever Peruvian project in the village of Llupa helping renovate the village’s junior school and teach basic English with a group of Madventurers. He subsequently went back to Llupa in 2004 and 2005 to help run and coordinate more projects there.

During his time there Jale developed his passion for the mountains and used his spare time to develop his ice climbing skills and make various attempts on some of the 6000m+ mountains that dwarfed the valleys surrounding the base town of Huaraz.

Having just finished his stint as Project Director on Vorovoro and while up in mountains in New Zealand with Ben, the two got chatting about the possibility of bringing the mountain experience to the Tribe, and the idea of Tribewanted: Andina was conceived.

While Tribewanted on Vorovoro has been developed as a total community and cultural experience, the Challenges have been introduced for those who really want to see what they are capable of while discovering a far-flung and culturally rich location.

This challenge also has a real personal element in it for Giles. Sadly this year Sarah Howard, old friend of Giles who was part of leading the Madventurer project in 2003 with him, died in a tragic bus accident early in 2008. A small donation of the amount will go to the charity she set up called Puentes which aims to provide the street children of Peru with a safe and happy childhood. Also as a bonus you will receive a years membership to Survival who campaign for indigenous tribal rights across the developing world.

Health and Safety

All our activities and climbs are led by some of the best Professionals in the area. Our Guides have all been trained at the Peruvian ‘Casa de Guias’ which is the national regulating body for climbing guides. These guides have years of experience in leading climbers and trekkers from across the globe and are fully prepared for an accident or emergency that may take place.

All expeditions carry full medical kits and are fully prepared to relocate anyone back to Huaraz should the need arise.

Huaraz is well equipped with good hospitals and pharmacists should the need arise to use either.

The itinerary has been carefully thought out to maximise our time in the area but also attempt climbs and treks that are well within the limits of anyone with a good standard of fitness.

Responsible Tourism

As in keeping with the Tribewanted ethos we will be trying to source everything as locally as possible for these treks and climbs. The guides are from the local area and we will be shopping at local market and using the best local transport available. Thanks to this policy we will be likely to have the high chance of experiencing some of the real Andean hospitality as we will be passing through areas where our guides and porters will have family and friends.

We will also be operating a strict ‘pack in, pack out’ policy on all rubbish taken on our hikes and treks.

Terms & conditions

“Mountaineering and remote trekking carry an inherent risk of injury and death, which cannot be eliminated. You must accept that although we do our utmost to reduce any risks to an acceptable level, there are chances of accidents happening.”

Booking Conditions:

All bookings are made with Tribewanted ltd, is registered in England & Wales under number 5675000 (hereinafter referred to as The Company).

The term “expedition” used in these booking conditions refers to the itinerary described on this website.

If you book to join an expedition, the Company cannot accept any responsibility for any of the travel arrangements that you make in order to join the expedition. The Company accepts no financial liability that may arise from any enforced change to your travel plans due to any alteration of the expedition dates, the itinerary or its cancellation, howsoever caused. You are advised to book transferable, refundable travel tickets with no penalties should a cancellation be necessary.

To book a place, follow the buy now links through paypal and send your deposit of £250 per person, per expedition. Unless the expedition is full, you will receive confirmation of booking.

Once booked, you must submit ‘online’ or by post a previous experience questionnaire and a medical declaration. After reviewing these, we may advise you to cancel your booking. If we do so advise, and if the deposit paid was no more than £250 per person, you may cancel, as advised, without penalty as long as the date we received your completed forms is within one month of the date you booked and no later than 2 months before the due departure date of the trip. If we receive your forms outside of these time limits, no matter when you booked, or the deposit was more than £250 per person, our normal cancellations and transfers conditions will apply and you will be liable for the appropriate charges.

You may pay your deposit and final balance using any lawful means. The total amount received by our bank must be no less than the full amount shown on your invoice. If sending money by electronic (bank) transfer then you must pay the remitter’s (your) fees and the beneficiaries (our) fees.

The final balance for your expedition booking and for any booked extension should reach The Company no later than 60 days before the expedition. If the balance is not received by the specified date, we reserve the right to cancel your booking and your deposit will be forfeited, unless a Director of The Company has agreed a delay in your payment. Bookings accepted after the balance due date can be secured with the appropriate deposit and full payment must then reach us within 7 days of us confirming your booking but no less than 3 days before your scheduled date of departure to take part in the expedition.

Notice of cancellation must be given in writing. Should you cancel, the following scale of charges will apply:

60 days or more before the expedition starts – loss of deposit.

30 days or more but less than 60 days before the expedition starts – 30% of total trip cost.

14 days or more but less than 30 days before the expedition starts – 60% of total trip cost.

Less than 14 days before the expedition starts – 100% of total trip cost.

Similar terms are adopted throughout the travel industry and cover the costs of advance payments made by The Company. Cancellation charges may be covered, in part, by your travel insurance provided the reason for cancellation falls within the terms of the policy.

After your booking has been confirmed, if you wish to transfer from one expedition to another, an administration charge of £50 per person, per booking, will be payable. At the same time, you must pay any costs that we have incurred in respect of your booking, such as deposits paid by us to agents, if these are neither refundable nor transferable. Transfers between expeditions will not be affected until all such fees and costs are received by The Company.

Transfer requests must be received by The Company in writing and before the date the final balance is due. A transfer request after this point will be treated as a cancellation and the transfer fee will not be accepted.

You may transfer your booking more than once, as long as you pay the transfer fee on each separate occasion, at the rate prevailing at the time of payment, and pay any costs incurred by The Company in respect of each booking held. The final expedition to which your original deposit is transferred must be one of three offered in 2009. Failure to travel within this time will be taken as a disinclination to travel and as a de facto intention to cancel the booking, regardless of the payment of any transfer fees or costs in the intervening period. Under such circumstances, the deposit and any money paid to affect a transfer, or transfers, will be forfeited to the Company.

During an expedition, every effort will be made to adhere to the planned itinerary but it must be realised that with adventurous activities of this type, or by being in the developing world, or by visiting regions with limited infrastructure by virtue of their remoteness or otherwise, or with world-wide travel in general, changes to the programme will occur from time to time. The Company accepts neither responsibility nor liability, for any ensuing costs, or the consequences of any such change, however caused.

Circumstances may arise where we are forced to alter dates, expedition duration, trekking routes, or hotel accommodation. We will try to inform you of any such changes as soon as we know of them.

On assessing the conditions expected to be encountered in the mountains or the abilities of the Team Members, your Expedition Leader may decide to change any aspect of the trip, if he or she believes that to continue with the itinerary or activities, or any latterly agreed alternatives, would place anyone at undue risk.

Your Expedition Leader will do his or her utmost to ensure that any problems are solved for the benefit of the Team as a whole. Signing the booking form signifies your acceptance of the Expedition Leader’s authority to make decisions affecting the group or individuals. For instance, the Expedition Leader may require an individual or individuals to leave the expedition if he or she believes that a person, or a person’s health, is at risk, if an illegal act is committed, or behaviour may become, or has been, detrimental to the safety, enjoyment or well-being of the group or of any individual within the group.

A client leaving an expedition at any stage, for whatever reason, will not be entitled to any refund nor to compensation unless agreed by a Director of The Company.

We receive regular Travel Advice from the UK Foreign Office (FO). We will not knowingly operate expeditions in contravention of such advice if it is published before the due start date of an expedition.

We will cancel an expedition if the FO Advice effectively puts the destination country or significant parts of the country out of bounds such as to make the principal objective untenable. If the principal objective remains achievable in observance of the FO Advice, we will alter the itinerary and the expedition will not be cancelled. For example, the FO may advise that it is unsafe to traverse an area which lies on the published approach trek. In such circumstances, if the objective can be reached by using an alternative route, we will do so and the trip will not be cancelled.

If the FO does not issue unambiguous advice against travel, a disinclination to travel on the basis of a perceived threat or hazard, howsoever formed, will be interpreted as a voluntary cancellation and the cancellation charges set out in these booking conditions will apply. This does not affect your right to transfer between expeditions under the terms of these booking conditions.

Non-UK Nationals should consult their own government for advice on travel to the destination country and all countries transited en route. We will not be bound by the advice of such foreign governments, nor will our booking conditions be waived, save where such advice coincides with the advice of the UK Government, and the booking conditions above become effective.

Team sizes described on this website are target sizes and may be increased or decreased at the discretion of The Company. We give no undertaking as to the minimum or maximum size of a team, but we do undertake to ensure that leaders and support staff are supplied in appropriate numbers to ensure the principle objectives of the expedition can be achieved. Similarly, leaders named in expedition descriptions, anywhere in our literature or on our website, may also be changed.

We reserve the right to cancel any expedition which does not have sufficient people taking part to make it financially viable. By the same token, we will endeavour to ensure that an expedition runs if at all possible. If an expedition is likely to be cancelled under such circumstances, we undertake to inform you as soon as possible, but this may occur after final balances are due.

Anyone booked onto an expedition cancelled by The Company will be entitled to a full refund. Anyone on such an expedition will be invited to transfer to another expedition and no transfer fee will be payable. Should you transfer to another expedition any difference in price will be invoiced or credited accordingly.

This expedition involves going to high-altitude and carry an inherent risk of altitude illness. Similarly, most of our trips visit remote locations or poorly developed regions where infrastructure is limited. In such places, the risks to health are increased and the ability to treat injury or illness effectively is reduced.

Additionally, climbing and mountaineering, which includes treks that cross glaciated terrain or snow-bound passes, are hazardous activities with a risk of serious injury or death. By signing these booking conditions you acknowledge these hazards and your acceptance of the associated risks.

Neither The Company nor any of its representatives will be responsible for any illness, injury or death sustained on our expeditions, nor will they be liable for any uninsured loss of personal property.

The expedition has days in the itinerary that are included to provide flexibility in case of bad weather, or some other untoward event, and thereby increase the chance of your principle objective being achieved and for the expedition to be successful. If these days are not needed in order to achieve the aims of the expedition and the team decides to return from the mountains early, any additional costs incurred by you and associated with extra hotel nights, or services that would not otherwise have been provided nor were given in the published itinerary, must be met by you at the time.

The Company cannot be made liable for the consequences of strikes, industrial action, wars, riots, sickness, quarantine, government intervention, weather conditions, the failure of a scheduled airline, or other untoward occurrences, whatever they may be.

In the event of civil unrest in a particular region, we undertake to inform our clients of the situation as soon as we have knowledge of it.

For the expeditions, you must have insurance that covers you for all of the activities, specifically those deemed to be hazardous, included in the itinerary and for any activities you may undertake if travelling independently as part of an extension. You must ensure you have adequate cover for search, helicopter rescue and repatriation in the event of a medical emergency. Your travel insurance provider must agree beforehand to meet the costs of any search, rescue or recovery, for medical reasons, of you to the nearest appropriate medical facility even if prior authorisation from the insurer may not be possible due to the remoteness of the recovery area or because medical expediency demands your recovery before such authorisation could be received.

Having made every effort to ensure the correctness of this website, we cannot be held responsible for any inaccuracies.

Prices on this website are based on costs and exchange rates as at 01.10.2008. We will do what we can to mitigate against any rise in our operating costs and strive to keep prices fixed. In the unlikely event that surcharges become necessary, the following conditions will apply:

a. Surcharges arising directly from a change in the world price of oil and levied by airlines, or agents acting for the Company, will be passed on and you will be invoiced accordingly.

b. If surcharges become necessary for reasons other than as a direct consequence of a change in the world price of oil, you may cancel your booking without penalty if the surcharge amounts to more than 10% of the cost of the Expedition.

The Company’s agents and representatives, other than a Director of The Company, are not entitled to promise refunds for whatever reason, and The Company will not be bound by any such promises.

These booking conditions may only be waived in special circumstances, and in writing, by a letter from a Director of The Company.

The terms and conditions of all agreements made with The Company shall be subject to, and governed by, English law.

When making your booking it is implied and accepted that you have read and understood all these booking conditions and agree to abide by them.
