I continue to research the issues concerning how soap pollutes- or does not.
This information is pertinent to all of us, on and off the island. IT IS TIME TO ELIMINATE completely ANTIBACTERIAL SOAP. These soaps contain a component that could cause wide spread damage…just watch this video, it doesn’t take much convincing.

Read more about the component TRICOLSAN which makes antibacterial soap such a problem

We can improve and save our natural resources by being informed about what really is and is not a problem. Do not trust advertising or general “knowledge”. Research anything that you are told and form your own opinion-intelligently.

This situation looks like a re-run of the DDT (insecticide) fiasco of 40+ years ago. Back then DDT was added to just about every household cleaning product. Then it was discovered the substance was a potent cancergen – with a massive campaign raised to ban the substance (achieved around 1966)

In fact DDT was not banned outright but it’s use was made subject to very tight regulation.
Herein lies the key: It is not, in general, the creation of substances that is bad – the bad part comes from [substance] mis-use.

Tricolsan is a potent anti bacterial agent. It works in a similar manner to an antibiotic. The [supervised] use of antibiotics (Penicillin et-al) & anti-bacterials like Tricolsan has saved countless lives world-wide. An outright banning of their use would be an utmost folly.

What has to stop is the wanton profiteering from the mass [uncontrolled] sale of such items under the [false] moniker of “its good for you” Problem of course is that one can have too much of a good thing, but sadly that does not always prevent those who should know better from milking the status quo for personal gain.
The life giving substance Oxygen also falls into this less is more category: Too much Oxygen will kill you – but just try living without it.

Thanks for putting perspective on this John. My purpose for putting this blog up was to help to create awareness about good and “bad” bacteria. I have always thought that using anti –bacterial products was not a great idea.
It appears to me, from reading the various articles concerning Triclosan that we need to respect the balance of bacteria in our natural environment, and nature’s way of keeping bacteria in balance. What I read pointed out that because most of the companies are all using the same anti-bacterial it could lead to the particularly strong, resistant strains of bacteria to become even stronger, thus the problems that are appearing in hospitals in England. I am by far no expert, but I try to understand how detrimental “fads” such as the widespread use of anti-bacterial products can be, how they are now threatening our water sources and how people can be led astray by advertising.(as well as misinformation). Balance, as usual, seems to be the key word regarding any substance such as Triclosan. Do you think that Anti-bacterial products should be taken off the market?
Thanks for adding your insights.
