Archeology dig on Vorovoro unearths 3000 year old civilization!
Last month, several archeologists, led by Archeology Professor Dave Burley from Simon-Frazer University spent a week digging on Vorovoro.
The archeologists interest in Vorovoro was sparked when, last November, they made a short visit to present sevusevu to
Poasa and request permission to visit Mali Island.
They were invited to stay for tea, so whilst the tea was being prepared and ever the curious scientists, they ventured out to the cassava patch and moved the dirt around a bit.
What they found excited them and immediately let to the planning of last month’s dig. They uncovered pieces of Lapita pottery, which confirms the oral legend of the Mali people -
that Vorovoro was among the first settlement of people migrating to Fiji.
It is estimated that Vorovoro may be the 2nd oldest settlement
site in Fiji!
Last month’s dig was successful – many more pieces of Lapita pottery
were uncovered, as well as other bits of jewelry, tools, shells, etc.
The archeologists took their findings back to Canada with them, where they will be studied and carbon dated before being turned over to the Fiji Museum
