Ironman!

Seeing as myself and Ben can’t do anything without trying to better eachother, we originally thought that we should put that to good use by raising some money for charity (Survival charity, protecting indigenous tribes across the world) through some sort of challenge. We were running the 4 peaks every sunday and we thought that we should try and break the 30 min barrier. However this fell early on in august so we thought we’d push ourselves one step further, run the peaks and swim the island. Both pretty savage events but combined could be really tough.
So the big day arrived with myself and Ben living up to our membership of the ‘overexcited club’ by jumping around the island waiting for the start. Beacause we had to time the tides perfectly (just the right balance between in and out to do the run without wading at any point and then deep enough to have something to swim in) we had to wait until 1pm. The sun was out, the sky was blue and it was HOT. However a challenge is a challenge and so there was no backing out.
After a quck interview session with Hassan and TW TV, the pink sulu was dropped and the challenge started. Late entries included Aaron from the tribe and Sosi on behalf of the Hammock Society. The peaks went well with bengazi finding the nerves of the occasion a bit too much on peak 4 and so decided to do some redecoration with that days lunch.
Peaks over and the swim started. I headed off towards Siberia and Ben towards Poasa as we went for the headland. We finally got our compasses sorted and rounded toards Nakawaqa. Up until this point all going well, the shoulders burning but feeling fresh. However rond the headland in notorious for difficult currents. Today was no different, swimming round past NW was tortuous, with a lot of effort expended for practically no distance. Sosi retired from cramp on the way but was happy with having completed 0.5 of the Ironman.
Big waves and currents made the rest of the swim tough but finally the finish line was in sight. Bengazi followed shortly by myself pulled up to the rope after 2.31, a great effort! Originally we wanted sub 2.45 so to get close to 2.30 was fantastic.
Rehydration ensued with a full tanoa.
A massive thanks to all who sponsored us (almost 650 GBP so far) and if anyone would like to help reach our target of 1000 GBP please click on the following link

Am going to donate some moolah to you – good effort and the important thing is that you did it for a worthy cause.
warasa! i’m so blessed to have been there to witness yet another first on the island…i will post more photos with some thoughts from the sideline peanut gallery on the event. go team!
We aussies live an ironman comp. Well watching it anyway so can’t wait to see more pics. But, it’s not clear who won!? Good on Sosi for representing the Hammock Society and achieving 0.5!
I had wanted to hear the nitty gritty so thanks Giles!!!
Really terrific achievement guys. Well done
Your all totally loony but what an awesome effort and to raise some good money for a great project. How the hell did you even get Sosi off his hammock to do even half the Ironman is a feat in itself. 0.5 by name, 0.5 by nature …lol
An awesome result boys. The run was never in doubt, not after an epic august, but that swim is a killer to do nearly 2.30 is trully worthy of mega man points. especially with so little practice. good work. next challenge….
