I visit Vorovoro in my dreams!

The absolute sadness of leaving a Paradise Island thoroughly ‘hit home’ when Geoff & I were in Nadi, utilising time before our connecting flight. Obviously this sadness was intensified, as we were leaving our daughter too! Only occasionally did our paths cross with Amy, the tribe manager, due to her work commitments, but when they did it was bliss!

Back-packers padded along the beach @ Nadi, only to flop beside a pool, slither in it or lounge in clinical plastic V shape chairs. The ‘Lali’ drum, (beaten by the Chief in Vorovoro,) signified the start of each day, here in Nadi, summonsed every one to a game of volley ball!

Young, healthy people lolled in various constortions, reading, squinting, plucking their over-ripe bodies. Looks of abandonment & dare I say, ‘boredom’ were engraved in their brows. Saggy stomachs fell over their bikinis & board shorts, whilst sweaty hands grappled with straws in milk- shakes.

I dearly wanted to yell @ the top of my voice,’Why are you wasting your lives here, listening to Western music, in the pretence of experiencing Fiji?’ Instead I brandished my ‘Tribe Wanted’ bag in front of their smeary eye-balls in the hope that some connection would be made! I wanted to scream, ‘Experience the exciting boat ride, approaching the wonderful peaks of Vorovoro. Instead of anguished stares, wondering if you are accepted by your lip-sticked, nail-varnished peers; enter the wonder of Vorovoro & be accepted for your personality & not your outer covering! Embrace the ‘Karmec’ duties & feel the warmth, compassion & genuine love of both the Fijians & the Tribe. Become involved with projects, which will engrave your accomplishment on the Island & it’s people. Experience the ‘real’ Fijian culture & not just a replica of artificial, flower adorned Fijians, swaying precariously to the sound of western music!’

What an amazing, cultural experience we have had! Many thanks to Ben,for being the ‘pulse.’ Thank you also, to the Tribe team & Team Fiji. Vorovoro is there for everyone to savour & to enjoy!

Mary
I loved your blog – it really comes straight from the heart. Am glad you got home safely but in a way I was hoping to receive an email from NZ from you! So you must promise that you are going to continue travelling and enjoying your new life to the max. You are an amazing woman and I enjoyed our time together on the island. I would love to get copies of the photos you took when we went to the village to play with the children as I didn’t have my camera with me at the time. Take care and best wishes Sue x

Hi Mary,
How wonderful for you and Geoff to experience Vorovoro with the added bonus of having Amy there too. I know it meant a lot to her having you on the island. And Geoff your input into the ongoing shower project is very much appreciated.
Jay
