Chief Blog - Week 2

Bula Sia Tribe members,
Welcome to my second week as chief. As always here on Vorovoro the tribe and I have been busy learning new skills from the Fijians and having lots of fun. This week we have been up to;
• Weaving palm leaves for the boat captains roof
• Water awareness day
• Fixing flooring of compost toilets
• Replacing lm fronds on Grand Bure floor with new ones
• Reef trip to the 3rd largest reef in the word
So our big day this week was on Thursday, which was water awareness day. This day focused on the amount of water 24 people use in a day. It’s very important for Tribewanted because as we move into the dry season there is almost no rainfall. Therefore we need to ensure we are using our water here on Vorovoro efficiently. The day was lots of fun and involved everyone including Tribe, Team Fiji and Team Kana. Throughout the day we would tally the amount of water we used at different stations around the island. These included drinking fountain, kitchen, showers and grog. We also had a great forum led by Chuck. We discussed issues that had happened in the past and how we could manage them and how we can translate what we are doing here on Vorovoro to life back home. It was a very interesting day and the results showed that each person used 6 litres of water a day, check out Chuck’s bog for more detail.

Also this week I set myself a challenge. During all three visits to Vorovoro I have never been on a reef trip. The main reason for this is because of the sharks. I had as conversation with Pupu in hope of reassurance that I would not see as shark. However when I asked him if there were ny sharks out at the reef he replied, “Lisa, yes it’s the seas it is their home. You come onto land and there are lots of humans because this is there home, so you go in the sea there are sharks as that is there home.” Despite this reassuring conversation I did it anyway. As I jumped into the sea it was cold, but I was calm, until I swam further out and I couldn’t see what was in front of me or the bottom of the sea. Well that was until a white tip reef shark decided to join me. It was right beneath me and at this point I decided to change direction, however so did the shark. So the shark continued to follow beneath, but eventually I reached shallower waters with beautiful coral. When I got to the coral I felt much more at ease, I saw so many colourful fish including my favourite finding nemo fish, the clown fish.
So it has been a busy week full of challenges, new ways of thinking and lots of fun. I can’t wait to see what next week brings.
Sota Tale, moce.

The Reef Trip is often a crowd pleaser. Those of a nervous disposition would be reassured to know that the Boat Captain is keeping a look out at all times as well as myself in the water. The sharks are very well fed with the abundance of fish and as long as we aren’t fishing, leave us alone. Icsaw a hammerhead shark a few months ago – awesome.
vina’a Lisa – love pupu’s reef trip advice and thanks for the work in getting the water day together, an important exercise
Lovely Lisa!! I am so thrilled to hear you are chief! I will see you very soon as I’m coming back for my birthday – will arrive next Monday your time :) Can’t wait to catch up and see if we can avoid cracking our bums on the hammocks (hehe)

Well done overcoming your fear Lisa! For me, it was jellyfish… even when Api wiped one over his face, I still didn’t feel comfortable in the water!
The info from Water Awareness day was really interesting too… I think we’re doing pretty well!
Great blog as ever and I am so proud of you for ‘taking the plunge’ :) x
