The Bird and the Bees... and the Pigs!
Tags:
We now have a bunch of chickens from my farm. That’s right folks, they’re back, and lets hope that they do better than the bees that also came from my farm, were very happy there, took one look at Vorovoro and fled!
These fluffy characters are egg laying Rhode Island Reds and have just reached the point of lay. We’ve got 46 of them at home and that’s a lot of eggs to eat, so I’m thinning my flock down by 5. Now, in the tradition of the predecessors, I’m looking for names of 5 English female monarchs…help me out please. I’ve got Queen Elizabeth II, Queen Mary, Queen Victoria… who else is there?
This week, Jimmy and I built a fairly sturdy chicken tractor and happily used up some of the scrap wire that has been hanging around. I want to leave three chickens in the old cage and put two into the tractor and rotate it around the gardens, then switch team A tractorites with team B coop sitters every other week. Bought eggs will soon be a thing of the past, and we should get nice little garden plots weeded and fertilized for free.
And the pigs are enjoying Vorovoro too. I haven’t done the pig tractor/leash/free range thing yet because I’m not relishing trying to move these rather large pigs daily between the pen and the tie up spot and back. I remember seeing the difficulties Team Fiji were having when the pigs first came. Maybe I’ll keep the idea for their kids instead, when the time comes.
RESEARCH NEEDED!
Does anyone out there have some pointers to share re. Pig husbandry? We currently feed them twice a day. 10 minutes in the morning on kitchen scraps (Will soon be boiling them to make a slop), green grass to snack on throughout the day, coconuts in the afternoon. Concrete pen is scraped clean each morning. Water is supplied the whole day, surplus green grass as a soft bed/nest. Poo into the bio digester. Am I missing anything needed for our pigs to be happy?
