Ringing in the New Year - Fijian style
On New Year’s Eve, we went to Ligau Levu and partied until it got really late. When the 2 hour long church services started, we came back to the island and rang in the new year on Vorovoro.
Dinner at Ligu Levu was super super awesome. The table was the longest I have ever seen in my life. It was made of corrugated iron on pieces of wood and had a temporary bamboo roof. We had a lot of chop suey and juice for dinner.
After dinner, everyone sorta just laid around and talked until the church services started. I made some new friends. We made lots of shadow animals on the wall – swamp monster, wolf, dog, and a goose. Two of the tribe members, Lizzie and Ruth, learned some fun new mekes with a few of the young girls.
Then we rode the boat back to Vorovoro. When we got back, there was a big tanoa ready and waiting for us. We hung out on the grog mat until it was midnight – although no one was sure when that exactly was, because everyone’s clock was different! Then we went outside and threw water on each other – everyone but me and Bethie got soaked!
By that time, I was exhausted, so I headed to my house and caught some zzzz’s! The next day was another day full of celebrating the New Year – lots more food, meke’s, singing, and of course, the Fijian New Year tradition of everybody wet, wet, wet!
Moce mada!

Oh what a great day that was! They all loved our Meke with a twist! Missing the ‘chillax to the max’ of Vorovoro! It been replaced but the hustle and bustle of city life! ;( See you all very soon (hopefully, if I’m allowed back lol)
Missing you Tomasi! Was just wondering with Bebe this week if you have left Sydney for the jackaroo adventure. Do you have any idea yet when you will be heading back to the island? XOXO!
