Wire this school…

TARGET

The Tribewanted Dream Foundation’s target for the first project is $4000 Fj. So far $2300 Fj has been raised. We need a further $1700 Fj (£550) to make this project happen.

PROJECT

The school has managed without the use of electricity, but having recently come into possession of a generator, they would greatly appreciate some assistance in wiring the school and its buildings. These include class rooms, hostel, teacher’s quarters and rest rooms.

There are a number of great benefits to be gained in the wiring of the school:

  • Powering computers
    • With regular use of computers, students will acquire the essential computer skills needed to go on to secondary education.
  • Lighting
    • Security lights will be available for the welfare of students and teachers.
    • Teachers will have the opportunity to do more work at night.
  • Further education
    • Teachers will be able to take extra classes with students in the evenings. This will benefit those students taking external exams such as the FILNA (Fiji Islands Literacy & Numeracy Assessment) and the Fiji Eighth Year Examination.
  • Benefiting the community
    • The school will be able to have Community Awareness Programmes (CAPS) for the parents at night.
    • Parents will be able to hold PTA meetings.
    • The Mali school will be able to host the Labasa Fijian Teachers Association meetings.

Self-sufficiency Vs Biodiversity. What’s the priority on Vorovoro?

This weeks online debate threw together two important sustainability issues.

What do we understand as self-sufficiency? Can a balance be found between trying to be more self-sufficient without undermining the islands rich and diverse natural ecosystems? Is learning more important than physical impact?

Take part in the debate and suggest actions here.

Tui Aussie’s week

Bula sia guys,

Another good week on Vorovoro. With our new centralised notice board completed, we’ve started to work on the types of information they’ll be used for. Kimbo been working with Ben and tribe members on this aspect, and I’m confident it will end up being a great addition to island life. We travelled to Vuo during the week to source the reeds for the reed bed from Tevita’s wife’s family home. I went there with Tevita and Leavi, which was great because we also got to see Leavi’s house and meet all of Ceila’s brothers and sisters. As always, we were welcomed into their village with open arms and ended up staying much longer than we originally intended due to the fact that we were presented with lots of food to eat and kava to drink, from perhaps the largest bilo I’ve seen so far in Fiji. If I had to guess, I’d say it was at least twice as
big as the ones we use on Vorovoro.

So, the reed bed is now finished thanks to Marau and Save’s help on putting the final touches on the design. We had a nice downpour of rain on Sunday, two days after completing our water catchment extension which meant that we were able to make the most of the unusually large amount of rain. Our web chief Aaron, is about the join the ranks of James (sustainability manager), Kimbo (Island manager) and Ben, by having his very own accommodation on Vorovoro. Tevita took Aaron out to FFI in Malau and they came back with a boatload of scrap wood which only cost them $10. With just a bit of scrap wood, some sand, a few tarps and some coconut leaves, the local guys can built a very respectable house. With the huge news of our solar and wind power installation (sponsored by Ecotricity) due early next week, it’s definitely going to come in handy as the TW staff will now be able to spend a lot more time on Vorovoro and be as productive as they would be in Labasa. I’m very happy that I’ll get to see such a huge moment in the project before I return to my normal life.

Mein Kanu: Tribe on the river in Germany.

My Vorovoro: Rebecca Ball

I took my last boat ride out of vorovoro for this trip just a few hours ago.
Being on Vorovoro was an amazing experience, something I have decided to repeat for as many years as its possible to do so.

Our island life was made up of a myriad of different adventures; snorkelling, fishing, making friends, cooking, building, helping with the gardens and engaging in the debates and flow of ideas that make vorovoro the paradise that it is. When we arrived on Vorovoro I was tense, wondering whether this island could live up to the expectations that i’d built. The people and the place exceeded what I had imagined. Vorovoro is a mentally stimulating and physically challenging place to live and work.

One of the most amazing features of my time on Vorovoro is how special everyone makes you feel, you don’t feel like just a visitor to this project, the island is yours in a way that other places can never be. Being a part of Tribewanted also gives you the opportunity to become part of the Mali You are absorbed so completely into a totally alien culture where you feel like you belong.

I’m so thankful to everyone I have met and everyone who made this adventure a reality. This is only the beginning, I will be back to help make all the dreams and ideals of this project become real.

Moce for now
