We need to construct a trial system in time for the arrival of the first footers on September 1st. Through research and discussion on the forum (many thanks to our sanitation co-ordinator John Wright, toilet member extraordinaire!) it seems there are 3 main options;

What do you think is the best way forward, taking in to consideration; environmental impact, cost, materials,style,comfort?

This will affect not only every member but also the local area so please think about all aspects when voting.

Update 21st July

Ulai and I are meeting with the Environmental Consultant next week in Suva where we will be looking at all aspects of dealing with waste on Vorovoro. I am conscious that this is an area that tribe members have already gathered a lot of info on so we will bringing this together next week and start to make some decisions on those lovely toilets! Toilets tribe prepare.

The Goal

To provide clean and ecological sanitation for up to 100 people to use at anyone time.

The Challenge

To find a system that fits with the island environment and can be built in a short period of time.

The Debate *

As the tribal toilet committee have already rightly pointed out, good and ecological sanitation is one of the first and key issues we must put our minds to. We would like to have the majority of toilets designed and built by September, which means moving fast.

There appears to be a surprising amount interest in the subject already from a certain section of current tribe members who are keen to make the implementation of a sound sanitation system a priority!

Ok, so here’s your background reading. In the meantime we will be doing environmental impact assessments on the land to find out where the best spot his for the toilets. We will post the results here.
