Washing
Water update 21st July
Currently there are two rain-water catchment tanks behind Tui Mali and Poasa’s houses. These are enough for the families and a few extra island guests to manage on but not much more. Over the last couple of months we have been talking to the Fijian government about drilling for water on Vorovoro. The drill was due to come over from Mali last week but broke! The next piece of machinery that can do this job is at the other end of Fiji. Ulai and I have a meeting in Suva on Monday about this. Ulai is confident that it is about putting pressure in the right places. However, what I would like to suggest is that we make a contingency plan if the drilling does not take place before September. I remember reading on the forums earlier about someone who had looked into desalination technology. Can we pull together a little research team to get in touch with UCL Enviro engineering department and others who can advise about getting this kind of technology to Vorovoro in the next 6 weeks.
The Goal
To provide washing facilities for up to 100 tribe members where used water does not pollute the island environment.
The Challenge
How to recycle and clean water? What kinds of products should we and should we not be using for washing? What kind of showering system can be implanted?
The Debate
One of the good things about living on an island in Fiji is that you do not have to worry about heating water to shower in – a cool shower is all you ever need! We may decide we don’t actually need any sophisticated systems and we are in fact happy with ‘bucket showering’. Or, we may not. But an important part of this debate is to decide whether we should try and change our normal toiletries (as much as we can) for ones that have less chemicals in and are therefore are less likely to do damage to the island environment.
