so, it’s interesting that the lighting issues are surfacing. this is clearly a concern everywhere in the world where energy is not easy to harness, moreso where the climate is rough on electrical rigging. i certainly am no expert, and i admit that i feel daunted just reading JW’s descriptions and instructions.

but i have been surveying solar products for some time. and i found one that i love!

solight is a water bottle (of the nalgene ilk) with a cap that has a small solar panel charging LEDs. ingeniously, it then turned the bottle of water into a perfect lantern. and they have even thought to add a red LED for night vision issues.

i’m bringing mine to the island, as the last time i was there i found the headlamps too blinding and, frankly, not that useful when you are trying to poke around your bags. this has been so well designed, and i’m looking forward to giving it a good test during april. it’s perhaps not the answer longer term, but it’s a start!
