Jodie Wantling's March 2009 Chief Manifesto
Why would I like to be Chief?
After spending nearly 3 weeks on Vorovoro I’ve realized I’m just not ready to say my goodbyes to the island! This opportunity is just such a unique experience and there’s no where else in the world quite like this incredible place, and secondly where I’d rather be!!!!
It took me till the second week to feel settled as I was quite overwhelmed once I arrived, but now I’m in a routine and feel part of the team. I’ve contributed to the ongoing projects here ….i.e. the dam whether it’s just taking refreshments and food up to boys, helping out in the kitchen with team Fiji preparing meals, foresting, collecting waste from beach to being part of new projects such as painting the toilets.
Being a chief for me would be the icing on the cake! I’m ready to take on a new challenge and throw my self in at the deep end and want play a larger part on the island and learn more about its culture.
What other than my skills makes me the right person for the job?
Firstly I consider myself as an active, outgoing individual and understand how demanding the job will be, I’m prepared to take on the extra responsibility with an enthusiastic approach and promise to always wear my smile!!!! I’m a real team player which I recognize as a key attribute to this role especially in gelling existing relationships with team Fiji and tribe members and developing new ones. I respect the Fijian culture and want to be hands on at the front line and continue to learn more throughout my stay.
What would I achieve as Chief?
In my opinion here on the island daily life runs smoothly and it’s a fantastic environment to live within, in which I’m proud to be part of!!!!! However recent weather conditions have resulted in wear and tear of benches, showers, and leaks in the thatched roof of the family
vale.
I took part on the hike up the four peaks with Ben Keane and Amy, where I noticed the amount of waste that was washed up from the previous floods. As I’ve collected waste on the beach clear up last week I’d propose this to be a weekly task and log the results. From chatting to the members it’s a interesting, educational fun thing to do and the feedback from the team is ’ There’s no time like the present’ There all eager beavers and want to crack on with this immediately! The wood and plastic bottles can be utilized for our ongoing projects i.e. wood for the fire/construction work, the bottles can be collected for the refloating the platoon!
In addition to the above … an idea sprung to mind after watching series five re the project. I’d enjoy planning into my month a few activities for tribe members. The Grand Bure is our main meeting place for sevu sevu etc. I feel as thought we could recycle are plastic’s and make some more cushions for comfort.
As chief in March as a priority I’d oversee these tasks are completed to my satisfaction and the whole teams, this would continue to sustain our living here and make me happy as though I’ve fulfilled my personal goals.
Tell us something interesting about yourself?
I bought a house quite young at 22 and called it ‘Dollypeg’, my neighbour whose 79 followed suit and called his ‘Winnie peg’. Family and friends thought this was hilarious but it’s all part of my personality.
In one sentence why should I be chief?
I promise to wear an item of pink everyday, and I’m not ready to give up grog!!!!
