Michelle Garricks April 2009 Chief Manifesto
Why would I like to be Chief?
After travelling for more than 2yrs around the world I have been to various places, interacted with many people and seen different cultures. However this will be the first time that I will be able to live it, breathe it and learn it.
Being Chief will enable me to interact with Fijian people and immerse myself in the Fijian way of life. I hope to pass lessons learnt and invaluable experiences to Tribe members and also to part of something rewarding and unique in a more guiding role.
What other than my skills makes me the right person for the job?
A chief needs to be approachable, flexible, and able to turn their hand to anything: proactive yet relaxed, bubbly but not annoying, willing to learn. I am all these things. April starts in three days and there is no chief. As soon as I arrived on the island I was asked if I would like to apply. It felt right. The island asks and the island receives.
What would I achieve as Chief?
The main project on the island at this time is the completion of the dam (patching, plastering and clearing) to ensure water in all seasons. As I am currently on the island as a tribe member, I will continue the development of the project. I also wish to complete the maintenance of the family bure (weather permitting) as this is currently leaking.
Tell us something interesting about yourself?
I was part of the British Athletics squad and was chased by a herd of elephants (not at the same time).
In one sentence why should I be chief?
What the Island wants the island gets.

Comments
michelle, i love the simplicity of “what the island wants, the island gets”...and the recognition that we need to pay attention to re-instating balance whenever it’s due. good luck!
Go Michelle!
