My Vorovoro experience

Dan Keene By Taniela, UK Posted 30 Jan 2007

It’s been a little over a week since I got back from Vorovoro and I’m slowly beginning to come round to what life is like again on this side of the world. My first impressions is that it is way, way to fast, what happened to just chilling taking your time and not rushing everything? One of the many things I learnt in Fiji was to stop, look around and soak it all up when you have the chance.  I recommend that everyone who goes to our beautiful island takes that moment. A few people have turned up and ask what’s there to do, STOP! Take a minute to realize where you are and the people you are with, then you will know that in fact sometimes doing nothing is actually doing a lot.

I could spend the next hour writing a detailed account of my experiences in Fiji and with the Mali community, but instead I’m going to give you my guide to time on Vorovoro so you too can hopefully experience what I did. Here are 10 experiences that made me smile, cry and laugh like I have never done before…

  1. Make Raijelli (Rachel) laugh, its one of the most amazing laughs I’ve ever heard.
  2. Chat with Frances and Va our wonderful cooks, there very funny too!
  3. Watch the sunset from sunset rock.
  4. Go on an early morning fishing trip, they rock (if I do say myself!)
  5. Head over to the school – I have some of my fondest memories there with the kids, be ready though it’s emotional!
  6. Drink Kava… Ask Api (our legendry boat driver) for a Sini or high tide!
  7. Snorkel, snorkel, snorkel…
  8. Try what I think is the best Banana cake in the world.
  9. Chill in a hammock as the sun goes down – watch and listen to the sea, you’ll be amazed at what you see.
  10. Explore our little slice of paradise, there’s more there than meets the eye.

I could go on but I don’t want to tell you what to do as the biggest part of the experience for me was the discovery. Keep an open mind and immerse yourself in your surroundings whilst your there, O and take some sun cream as it bloody hot!
