Paradise or Bust
BBC2, 9:00 PM
There’s trouble is paradise for entrepreneur Ben as he tries to raise funds for his eco-village in Fiji.
How inconsiderate – here’s Ben, doing his best to start a new tribe on a Fijian island, and what do the Fijian army do? Stage a blooming coup d’état on the mainland, that’s what, depriving Ben and elected leader Stuart of much needed tourist income. Don’t these soldiers know the BBC is trying to make a programme here? Faced with a lack of wedge, Ben heads back to Blighty, his grass skirt tucked between his legs…

Very accurate summary fo what happened in December 2006 – could not have put it better myself!
A lot of the conversation amongst those involved with the project and in Mali at the time was about teh impact the situation was making on Fiji as a whole. But this particularl story is about how the coup was effecting the Vorovoro project – its an example of how tourism struggles along with the rest of the economy during these times.
Sounds cool!
