Bamboo dreaming...

I have the incredible luxury of living in a city and a state where being eco-conscious is becoming more and more the norm…but even with that in mind, one has to search to find great products that are more than just advertised as “green” and good for the environment. As an avid product tester, I decided to treat myself to a rather posh set of sheets as my chief gift before heading over in April. I know how damp the island can be, and sleeping in the humid night air is so uncomfortable when you’re sticking to your bedding.

So, I returned to a great place called Kelly Green that has cool books and house furnishings and Baggus! And I invested in a set of BambooDreams sheets. These are made from a new fabric woven from the fibers in bamboo. Much as we beat the bamboo, flattening it for use in weaving walls, if you go a bit further, you can actually weave the fibers into the most incredibly soft material.

It’s got a weight that’s a bit heavier than cotton, but it feels like silk. It’s highly breathable, and even better, it’s anti-bacterial and anti-microbial, so nothing can start to grow on them in the damp. I found them to be an amazing life saver and so lush. Lucky me, they’ll work wonders in my non-air-conditioned apartment through the sweltering LA summer! For now, the sheets are still on the island with Chief Linda…

But start asking around at shops, see if you can find clothing or bedding made from this amazing highly sustainable resource. It’s faster growing, requires less water and land, and provides more oxygen than the comparable stand of trees. The more that we can get industry to start investigating new materials and processes like this, the sooner we can get competitive pricing and start to change the world one bed at a time!

Mmm now that sounds very interseting about how much oxygen bamboo produces, I will look into the possibility of planting a bed of those in my garden when I get back from Vorovoro

Bamboo is indeed wonderful – so soft and the antibacterial/anti microbal and moisture wicking properties are fab. It’s replaced hemp (quite heavy) as the fabric de jour for the last couple of years in BC.

I was really hoping we could use bamboo for our next batch of TW t-shirts (given that bamboo suits our sweaty tropical needs perfectly. Also, for further down the line, I'm looking at the viability of setting up harvesting and manufacturing of bamboo in Fiji (at present, most comes from China).

There is a problem though, in research very much is said about how bamboo is very quick growing and simple and sustainable to harvest. This is all true, BUT to breaking down bamboo in fibres suitable for weaving is primarily a chemical process. I’ve found a couple of companies that deal with the chemicals ethically (re-use), but, from what I’ve read, I think most don’t. Something to consider.

I have links to companies that are eco friendly in their practices, but I’m at a net cafe in Dublin and in a rush to meet PuPu Peter Harris!! I’ll add thinks later…
