“Having been involved with Tribewanted since the start I’ve gone from acting as the Sustainable Communities Advisor to being elected on to the board of trustees as Chair. I got involved with this project for a lot of reasons, not least, because I believe tourism has the potential to benefit visitors and locals alike.

My background is in the charity sector, and I spend my working life supporting charities back in the UK to enable them to grow and to get better at what they do. I finally made it to Vorovoro in July, and spent time a lot of time with the local gang (the Fijians), which was one of the most fun, memorable and unique things that I’ve ever done.

I am hoping that the development of the Tribewanted Dream Foundation will give people the chance to support a community in Fiji that is frequently overlooked. This should be a fantastic opportunity to support the people of Mali in helping them work towards creating a more sustainable and secure future for themselves.”

“I joined Tribewanted in May 2006 after reading an article in the Metro newspaper – within a few minutes of checking the TW website I had the credit card out !! TW seemed (and has turned into) a brilliantly different take on travel and internet communities and has been a hugely enjoyable experience to date. I visited the island during the second week of operation in September 2006, a visit which included being evacuated from the island due to a bush fire, and then again in September 2007 for the first year anniversary. I have also met many people off the island for various social events, and am happy to count a significant number of them as true friends.

My background is IT – 3 years working for a software house, and then 15 years for a global investment management company. Last year I gave this up to let my life take a new direction, which will hopefully be centred around Fiji – a place I have visited on numerous occasions and now own some property.

I see the Dream Foundation as a vehicle that can run effectively alongside the Tribewanted project to promote sustainable projects and training with the wider community in this area of Fiji, not just Vorovoro and the people of Mali. Tribewanted has been created as fixed term project (3 years) in it’s current format. This will be subject to change over the coming months and years. The TW Dream Foundation is a long term initiative which will continue in association with TW, but independently of it.”

“I initially joined Tribewanted in April 2006, having little understanding of what the project was all about. I had no idea at that time what an impact the project would have on my life. Since then I have been fortunate enough to visit Vorovoro twice. As I wanted to see the island in its natural state, I traveled to Fiji as a ‘first footer’ on 1st September, returning a year later for our one year anniversary celebration. It was amazing to see what had been achieved on the island in what was a relatively short space of time.

After traveling for many years, mainly through work in the yachting industry, I became increasingly frustrated with the negative aspects of tourism. In Fiji I finally discovered a project which proved to be innovative and exciting. There can be few visitors to the island that have failed to be touched by the generous and cheery nature of the Mali people. When I first visited the local school, they had very little in the way of learning materials and facilities, yet the children were an absolute delight to be around.

Now I am settled back in the UK, working as a recruitment consultant, I continue to enjoy my involvement in the project as a trustee for the Tribewanted Dream Foundation. We have already gained so much personally from our interaction with the local community and our aim is to give something back which will hopefully benefit the area for many years to come.”
