Wind power and biodegradable plastics

Technology is great because it allows us to not only invent, but also reinvent. From bio-fuels to reusable vehicles for space flight, there is a lot of work going into finding better solutions to problems that were solved decades.

Today I came across two new exciting technologies: smaller, more stylish wind power, and biodegradable plastic bags.

The story about wind power and the Helix Wind turbine is in stark contrast to this post about a maglev wind turbine with the power of 1000 conventional turbines, but it still seems to get the job done. The attractive bit about the Helix is that because of it’s larger surface area, it requires less wind to spin, meaning it can be mounted lower to the ground. They are also supposedly bird safe.

More exciting though is the promise of biodegradable plastic bags made from corn starch. Is there nothing that corn can’t do? In the future, we’ll not have to worry about national nature reserves being strip mined for fossil fuels, but rather leveled and planted with corn!
