Aquaculture gets boost in Sierra Leone

Mariah Boyle By Maya, California, USA Posted 10 Jul 2010

I follow the FAO (Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations) on facebook (and suggest you do too!) and they recently posted a news article about an FAO donation of $28,000 (US) of fish feed to fish farmers throughout the country. Illegal fishing is impacting the wild fish stocks in Sierra Leone, so aquaculture is a great alternative to provide income, food, and reduce the pressure on wild fish. A “strategic framework for sustainable aquaculture” program has been developed recently for the country to encourage fish farming. Nearby countries like Ghana are large aquaculture producers, raising fish like tilapia. In Sierra Leone fish farming is relatively new and undeveloped, with only 1,500 ponds in the entire country.

Do they catch Tilapia in Sierra Leone? I get it on offer from Tesco, but would much rather catch it and eat it fresh.
