Sustainable Seafood: What you order makes a difference

In my last post you saw the video about illegal fishing off Sierra Leone. Now learn how can you help the artisanal fishermen of Sierra Leone by what you order for dinner by ordering seafood that isn’t from the illgeal fishing vessels off Sierra Leone’s shores.

To do your part, follow these easy steps:

1. Eat local seafood – this will help ensure your fish is from a local, legal and well-managed fishery, with less chance of coming from an illegal fishery. Fresh fish must be labeled with a country of origin just like produce. Start to learn about where your fish come from.

2. Eat sustainable seafood – use your seafood watch guide to order sustainable seafood. Management of fisheries is taken into account when scoring the sustainability of a fishery or farm, so more sustainable options often have a lower risk of being harvested illegally.

3. Ask you local grocery store or restaurant about their sustainable seafood policy. Companies with a sustainable seafood policy are typically working to improve the sustainability of their inventory and ensuring the legality of the all the seafood they sell.

4. Join the discussion online, and harvest some sustainable seafood in John Obey with us. Take the above three steps, then tell us – what is your favorite local and sustainable seafood dish?
