What do 12V pumps, water-saving devices and biodegradable wipes have in common

The answer is they have all been donated by some very generous companies. This is a thank you to them, without whom we probably would not be reaping the benefits of their innovative products on the island now.

Water saving adapters fitted to toilet tap

Thanks to Tapmagic we were able to fit some of the taps on the island with water saving devices which have cut our water consumption

on those taps by up to 30% – essential to preserve precious water during the dry season.

Tapmagic is one of many companies that now produce a range of water saving products. Very easy to install, these cheap devices can be

adapted to taps, shower heads and there are even some gadgets out there that allow you to recycle your bath water! Why not have a go?

Biodegradable wipes

Wipes are great – they are practical and hygienic – but wipes are bad as they are part of the growing selection of use and throw away products on the market…To put things into context, if someone were to load all of the disposable wipes purchased by consumers in North America last year onto 18-wheel semis, the caravan would number 9,000 trucks and stretch for 68 miles.

So, in steps Canawipe, distributors of WysiTMWipes, one of the first biodegradable products out there. I contacted them as I was acutely aware of the amount of wipes being brought onto and disposed of on the island, and wanted to do something about it. They have very kindly donated several thousand wipes to the island, so a big thank you to them. There is definitely room for improvement in this area, cutting down on all the harmful chemicals in favour of natural alternatives, but an encouraging start nonetheless.

There is a growing range of natural products available out there, for everything from surface cleaning to clothes and dish washing. Ext time you go shopping why not substitute one of your conventional products for a natural alternative and see what you think!

12V Water pump

Another challenge I set myself as sustainability manager was to solve the problem of getting the water from the tanks by the kitchen and the vale up to the larger tanks on the hill. After scouring the net, I found a manufacturer who seemed to produce one of the only water pumps able to provide us with the kind of lift we were looking for, whilst also running on 12V.
A massive thank you to SHURflo, who have now extended their support of the project by sponsoring us with a second water pump which we hope to have in place very soon. Shurflo are a long established manufacturer of a variety of pumps to the marine and leisure industries.
With Chris Marino and John Wright on hand to install the pump back in September, gone are now the days of manual pumping, and the tank can be pumped up to the larger tank on the hill within a couple of hours.

For those of you lucky enough to have somewhere of your own, pumps like these can come in very handy. Simply wired to a car/leisure battery charged up by a small solar panel, pumps like the ones used on the island can be used to pump your harvested rainwater to where you need it most.

All phenomenal stuff Duncan – you’ve done such a great job upgrading the island to be super-sustainable while proving that living green doesn’t mean living in the stone age – cheers!

Duncan, after standing in the rain and trying to frantically pump water for just thirty minutes from the overflowing catchments at the Vale and the Kitchen, I can say that the little pump that you brought with you is probably one of the most valuable pieces of equipment on Vorovoro! Having the electricity provided by Ecotricity was great, but having something to use it on makes it all the more worthwhile. And now having this, I think that the tribe might find it more difficult doing without the pump than without lighting in the kitchen. Great foresight on hooking this up, and kudos to John Wright and Chris Marino for making great, safe, and economical use of the power on the island!
