Great Mali District Sunflower Competition!
Its a memory from my youth which sparked this week’s green club activity: the Great Mali District Sunflower Competition!
The thinking was that whilst some of the children are regular visitors to the garden during the week for watering, weeding and harvesting, others aren’t as keen. A competition to see who’s sunflower will grow the tallest should prove a strong motivator for each of them to get involved, the condition being that they each have to tend to their own, clearly marked by labels cut from old water bottles.
Another exciting prospect is the making of cards by the children to help raise money for garden tools which are desperately needed. A flower press was made from ply wood off-cuts and a few bolts, and filled with cardboard re-used from old beer crates. Another great example of re-use, with only the blotting paper which was kindly bought and donated by tribe member Janine. The press is full of lovely flowers collected by the green club girls and leaves by the boys. Results next week!
Tribal challenge:
The icing on the cake would be for us to be making our own paper from recycled cardboard, paper and newspapers. Why not try doing this at home and send your feedback or tips . We need your help!
