Peanuts!!! Once grown extensively on the island by Poasa and Tui Mali’s grandfather, peanuts are both an easy to grow and versatile nut, which will provide a bumper crop with very little care required in just under three months.

Having bought the green peanuts at the market, which come in a shell just as we get them back home, we started pealing them only to realize we were presented with another issue: what to do with the shells?

It was one of those marriages made in heaven. We had been planning a bean bag making workshop for the Green Club to illustrate the reuse of plastic as a stuffing when Tribe Member Julie suggested that we use crushed peanut shells instead.

Needless to say that the thrifty plan worked a treat and the children as always thoroughly enjoyed the workshop as well as having bean bags to take home with then to play with. Happy days.

Great thinking guys! Sounds like fun—what a resourceful solution.
