Self-sufficiency report – November 2007
Tags:
Below is the first self-sufficiency report to have been compiled on Vorovoro. The aim of thee recording and reporting of data is to ascertain how close (or far) we are from self-sufficiency. The monthly reports will also allow us to track the effects of any changes we make, from how the food is sourced, grown, caught or bought to how we reuse, recycle or dispose of our waste.
1. How the data was compiled
All food to be fed to the members is dated, weighed and categorized when it enters the kitchen in a logbook. Similarly, all waste that leaves the island or is disposed of offsite is also weighed and recorded.
From this raw data we are able to compile the breakdowns found below
2. Total distance traveled
The tribe boats have traveled a total of 188 miles this month to purchase or source their food and dispose of their waste.
This calculation was based on reef trips and fishing trips, estimated at 5 miles per trip, and trips to town at 13 miles return. Not included in the mileage calculations is the distance traveled to purchase the chicks we have been rearing

brilliant! This is really cool, Duncan, and it will be very interesting to see how it changes with the months and traffic on the island. One of the questions that pops into my head looking at the charts, is the total weight of the waste. Just to compare it to the weight of stuff coming in… If the weight of waste is only 15% of the weight coming in, we’re already doing a pretty good job producing little waste. The spreadsheet is wonderful and has lots of great information on it. Lots to keep track of!
That is a whole lot of food though! Sure are alot of cakes! We went through 600kg in a week?! Was this during a big celebration or something?
