Why would I like to be Chief?

When I was on Vorovoro in September last year I had an amazing time, I felt a connection to the island, the local Fijians, and the staff there, it felt right. Once I was there I could see that people were genuine about what they were trying to achieve in the island, and from what I saw of Fiji it appears to be a very unique project. I appreciate the fact that Vorovoro is trying to bring cultures together so that learning and growth can come from all, I guess that really appeals to me, as I have always enjoyed sharing knowledge and experience with others, regardless of who they are.

What would I achieve as chief?

First priority would be to assist the current staff in the day – day running of the tribe, be that assisting in organizing the weekly food runs to Lambassa or the next trip to the local school or the next Cava ceremony . Additionally I like to work as a liaison with the new tribies coming to the island, to help them orientate to the island and ease the transition as much as possible. Most of all I’d like to get to know the local Fijian better, last time I was there I felt that the best part of staying at Vorovoro was getting to know the local lads, also I believe Save is still one up on me in the chess department. When I was the Ciarn was chief, I thought he did a great job and I would hope I could live up to his example.

What, other than my skills, makes me the right person for the job?

Well im a genuine no bullshit kind of guy and tell it as I see it, if Vorovoro wasn’t something I felt strongly about I wouldn’t bother.

What would you like to achieve as Chief?

When I was there in September I helped one of the local lads with a chronic shoulder condition, its what I do in my professional career as I am a rehab therpaist/acupuncturist. I’d like to offer my skills in rehab and acupuncture to the tribe and local community. Perhaps set up a small temporary clinic where I can offer treatments. I’d also like to spend time with the local medicine people to exchange knowledge, and perhaps teach some basic rehab therapy techniques to those who wish to learn. Perhaps do a series of informal lectures/education sessions about the body.

As chief, I will be given a small pot of money with which to leave my legacy. How will I spend it?

Well as im an academic kind of guy I’d like to set up a text library for the tribe to use, if possible I’d get texts in anatomy, physiology, clinical rehab and remedial massage texts, ect, I’d discuss it with t he tribe to see what kind of information and knowledge they are interested in and then source the relevant text material. I believe that information is way to liberate ones mind, and the right text book in the right hands can literally change someone life, I know it did for me :)

Tell us something interesting about yourself…

Ok I’ve been studying and practicing Tai chi and Chinese medicine for the last ten years, it’s a bit of a passion of mine, I’d be happy to teach any one on the island about it.
Ive also spent way to much time at uni, racking up three degrees, but what can I say, I like learning about new things. I have a passion for history, and love to play any kind of game.
Im currently working as a rehab therapist at a hospital, and a local school for disabled children. In addition I work in private practice in acupuncture.
Aslo im bringing my brother across with me, hes really looking forward to it

In one sentence, why should I be chief?

Because I have something unique to offer, even if I don’t get chief position, im still coming over.

As I do not know Dan it may be unfair of me to chose a side but I did get to know Andrew during his last visit to Vorovoro and I think he would make a very good Chief. He has a calmness and thoughtfulness that will make him welcome at Tui Mali’s side on the Cava mat.

bula andrew! just a comment, as it sounds like you’ll be going back either way, there were a couple of massage therapists who were on the island while i was chief in april, and they had some interesting discussions with save and va about healing, since fijians believe that these skills are passed down through family lines. pupu actually hurt his back pretty badly, and he let vanessa do some work on him.

so, while we have a library on the island already, having a few books on variou shealing techniques and herbal rememdies could be a cool addition. likewise, capturing or documenting some of the fijian practices seems like an interesting project as an extension of what you’re suggesting. best of luck!

Having been on the island at the same time as Andrew, I have to agree with Ciaran. I think he’ll make a fantastic chief. I know he’ll fit in well and believe he’ll work hard to accomplish his goals. You have some great suggestions Andrew! Good luck!
