Internet Connection? Mobile Phones?

Nigel Carlos By Rocco, London, UK Posted 19 Feb 2008

Hi all,

I’ve been watching the BBC2 programme and can’t wait to get out to the island.

One question: Is there internet connection out there on Vorovoro now?

Also Are there UK Plug sockets to charge my digital camera?

Do mobile phones work out there?

I look forward to hearing your comments!!

Thanks,

Nigel

Hi Nigel
There is only limited power supply on Vorovoro – but sufficient to charge cameras, phones & similar items.
Outlets are Australian style, not British, 230V AC 50Hz
There are also 12 volt DC outlets on island (Car cigar lighter style) If poss bring 12 volt charger(s) for “electronic toys” as the later is far more economic on the limited (just wind & solar) power source.
Mobile phone reception on island is possible but patchy. The only provider is Vodaphone – a phone on any other network will_not connect, there are no cross roaming agreements due to the monopolistic nature of the Fiji ‘phone network.
Internet on island is possible but only via GPRS and is far too slow for anything other then basic text E-Mail.
An internet cafe in Labassa (on mainland) provides full internet facilities but the connection is still very slow. Forget uploading of photos, let alone video, unless you desire to spend all day in a dark back room
