The video I have titled “Sing4Grog” is fairly typical of island life in the evening, although the above video was shot by myself late afternoon Tuesday 16th Dec directly after my sevusevu.

Things have evolved tremendously on Vorovoro since my very first arrival Sept 2006. Then of course we had nothing. At the first anniversary Sept 2007 my comment was “100 times better” For where we are now 1000 times better is a more appropriate description.

Christmas /new year is a very special time on Vorovoro. However to get the full picture / experience of island life a visit at that time should ideally commence at the beginning of December & extend into the 2nd week of January. For personal reasons I foreclosed on my original planned leaving date by several days which, with hindsight, was a mistake. If I had not previously visited I would have been far more disappointed then I was with having to leave directly after the new year celebrations.

Photos from this visit can be seen here:
http://tinyurl.com/TW-Xmas2008 At present I have had no time to caption any of them but may do so later.
a subset of captioned photos can be seen attached to this blog

No general projects were running over the Xmas period but there were
many details left to tie up with Alan’s wind turbine, including resolving a problem when a vital part burnt out (more detail will be provided in a separate blog) The other major project, which is somewhat long term due to its considerable complexity, is the dam for the waterfall. This is impressive. The holding basin has a volume of (by first approximation calculation) of some 265000 ltrs – which means the dam wall needs to be strong enough to safely hold 265 tons.
Although it will be late Jan / early Feb (or possibly a bit later) before the dam is complete rough calculations of the volume of water cascading over the beach waterfall following 2 days of near continuous rain indicate it would take no more then 2 – 3 days of rain to completely fill the dam.

Great photos, JW, they depicted the growth and evolution of TW Vorovoro from the first days there and are very recognizable from comments here. The Fijians rule! Justin

Hi JW!. Most eager to hear what happened to my turbine. From your pics it looks like you were very busy making improvements to the electrics. Much appreciated ( the battery house got big !! ). From the photos i’m guessing that the dump load got too hot and shedded it’s soldered wiring and that you have replaced this by a bank of 12V car lamps ??. On the positive side this means the batteries managed to reach full capacity, on the negative the turbine could have spun out of control !! I didn’t have time to fully test this feature. Also liking the brake switch. please drop me a line as soon as you get a chance. Best regards. Alan
