Tribewanted: Vorovoro

So, one of things I liked to highlight when giving the chief tour around the island is the way that members get involved, bring their energy and interests, and contribute to the community. Andy Luckman was an absolute legend with his digeridoo skills, but I adored Andy much more for his enthusiasm for sharing.

He not only decided to build some diges (what the heck is plural for digeridoo, Andy???) out of local bamboo, but also he held classes, involved people in decorating instuments, provided accompaniment and delight during meke and evening mat jam sessions, and inspired everyone to try that hand at making music.

My favorite of his contributions was a huge pan-pipe like bamboo creation to be played with a flip-flop. Marau was a natural. And it’s not unusual to stumble onto a scene, as we did late one afternoon, of mayhem turning into magic in the dusk.

Marau and his toiletiers, otherwise gaining infamy as the Valelailai (toilet) Band, including Pupu and Leavi, struck up a tune and had a crowd all but tossing coins just minutes later. This will long stick with me as a serendipitous alignment of talents, passions, and people coming together.

I just hope the band doesn’t break up…
