the 4 peaks challenge
we gathered just after breakfast for a short briefing. How true the advice would turn out to be ” take more water than you need” Off we set with a spring in our step. it wasnt long before we reached the base of peak no. 1. among my companions were my daughter & my mother. Mateo had accompanied us incase either of them couldnt make it & needed to turn back. (what about me?)I thought as the incline steepened & my breaths became gentle pants! about half way up, I looked skyward & saw an angel! the sunlight as a backdrop. This was no ordinary angel but My Angel aka Angelique,my daughter!! wow she had made it & was standing proudly grinning down at me. obviously this spured me on. If they can make the 1st peak they’ll be fine echoed in my head when i enquired of Giles, if my mother & daughter could come. Quickly i glanced around & saw Hazel taking her last few handfuls of grass & heaving herself up. -we had made it all 3 of us yipee!! The view was well worth the effort. mistakenly I thought the rest would be plane sailing ha ha. strangly after a much needed drink of water, photo opportunity & short rest we headed back down the way we came?! the other peaks, rocky, grassy, littered with trees were all met with a mix of ease, fear, pants & determination from the group & as promised delighted us with spectacular scenery. The sun was relentlessly baring down on us the entire way & our clothes soaked with sweat ( I know women dont sweat but this was an exception!!) yet our comradship & self appreciation grew.We finally made it back in time for lunch! the next day we did have a few cuts, stings, bruises & aches (well i’ll speak for myself) but it was worth it in so many ways. definitly recommend it! big thanks to all. esp. Giles & Mateo (who can aparently do the four peaks in 30 mins!)
