Hmmm. I have a bit of a problem with biofuels. They’ve been trumpeted as the new green solution to oil. But there are huge caveats. For a start, burning them releases carbon – just not as much as fossil fuels. Second, the rush to produce biofuels has seen vast tracts of wood and forest land turned over to plants that can be used to produce them, with the knock-on consequence for global warming (trees soak up much more carbon dioxide). Third, agricultural land is being turned over to biofuel production too, with a knock-on effect on food supplies. Overall, we should be very very wary of treating biofuels such as ethanol as the way forward. Especially in a country like Fiji where it’d be all too easy to turn over areas like rain forest and palm plantations into cassava plantations for a quick buck.

I have said the same for years, but instead of oil biofuel why not natural alcohol, apple cider, distil it, to alcohol, then burn as fuel, apple trees easy to cultivate
