Voting for Chief

Joyce Ward By Jay, Essex, UK Posted 26 Jun 2008

The situation of voting for Chief does seem a little weird. Surely ALL the candidates should be on offer and then we can decide. As it is first one Andrew then another Daniel and now a question asked is a third person Adam going to stand.

Easy done set a deadline when to apply by.

Not a level playing field otherwise, as once voted, no way to change ones mind.

Jay, the deadline was about 2 months ago – no applicants. We finally got an applicant over the weekend, and then another one last night. Apologies for the mix up, but nothing ever seems to happen until the vote goes up then everyone comes out of the woodwork with their applications. Basically, it’s better to have competition for the position than not to have any, so Ben and myself decided to reset the vote.

I don’t know this third guy, but we haven’t heard anything from him yet

Many thanks for the explanation and now understood

Adam Pacey is the chap who interviewed Tevita and scribed Te’s blog. I’m thinking he may have left the island or decided not to run after all?

Bula,

There seems to be some confusion, Adam Pacey would have made a great chief but he decided not to run for it as he has now decided to spend his last few months travelling in Africa and we wish him good luck.

i just seen this!
i still think that it is a good idea if a chief only comes up near the ending of the month before either declare on line that someone has offered and wait a day or two then put him/her up for election with anyone else who then thinks they will have a shot or on their own. Because if qhwn you open the voting there is only one person anyone voting then will either vote for them or the on-island team and so rather make a mockery of adding any other people.
IMHO!!

rather incoherent me feels!! i meant if the person only offers near the end of the month they are applying for of course!!

I can see what you mean Avril but the reality is that people on island decide to run at the last minute and also people decide months before hand to run so it’s hard administratively. And some people need notice to make changes to their life to enable them to stay or head out to Vorovoro.

I think it would be good to have a reminder perhaps pop either in the newsletter or in the forum but maybe this happens already..and, if someone has provided their manifesto rather than adding it only to have people go ‘oh right, better add mine too’ then maybe a general call notice added e.g. ‘one manifesto received, anymore?’ with a deadline of a few days so that at least two go up together ? Otherwise I am happy with the reset option..
