Fire Lighting ... The Fijian Way

Joyce Ward By Jay, Essex, UK Posted 26 Oct 2008

Firstly take some dry coconut fronds

Secondly take a piece of dry thicker coconut stem –bend it and bash it to split the fibres,

Then place the dry fronds between the bent stem and place in fire pit

Add a few dry coconut husks with fibres loosely teased out

LIGHT THE FIRE

Remember treat the fire like a baby

Thin twigs at first to give it life, then bigger pieces to sustain the fire.

SIT BACK AND ENJOY

BUT being careful not to burn the Bure down

LOW FIRE IN HIGH WIND

Naka Jay or Marama Fire Starter! Loved your helpful ‘fire’ lessons when you were on the island so glad that you have shared this with everyone! The fire just hasn’t been so big and blazing now that you have gone…think you need to come back again and show us all how its done! :)

Yes certainly miss those seaside fires, need to train up a few more tribies.
Soon to be firework night here, I’ll just settle for a nice big fire.
