Elaine Murray's March 2008 Chief Manifesto

Elaine-rose Murray By Elaine-rose Murray, , Posted 09 Feb 2008

Why would you like to be Chief?

I would like to be chief because I feel that I could offer the island an enormous amount of fresh thinking, experience and enthusiasm as well as a very willing pair of hands … I am not afraid of hard work! I know that I would gain an amazing amount from my time on the island in terms of living a more ecologically friendly lifestyle which I would want to take home and apply to my life and work.

What would you like to achieve as Chief?

To make sure that I’ve made a big positive impact to projects already underway, to ensure that Tui Mali’s tribe and the visiting tribe on the island are happy and motivated, and that that we are communicating as regularly and interactively as we can to tribe wanted members around the world.

What, other than your skills, makes YOU the right person for this role?

I am an eternal optimist and very pragmatic and practical. I’m used to working in very male dominated environments, where peacemaking skills are often needed! I’m pretty good at seeing the whole picture, overcoming any hurdles through innovation. I generally tend to get on with anyone, what ever walk of life … and I have a mischievous sense of fun .. so hopefully I’ll make a good addition to the team :)

As Chief you will be given a small pot of money with which to leave your legacy. How will you spend it?

I would like to take the first couple of weeks on Vorovoro to talk with local and visiting tribe members to identify any issues and opportunities on the Island within the community and then decide so that I know the money well spent and it is definately making a positive impact!

Tell us something interesting about yourself

I traveled across Africa camping and did a sky dive in the Namibian desert .. and loved it so much I did another one straight after and now want to get my license. I once shared a bed with Paula Yates and Yasmin Le Bon … no scandal :) .. it was for the programme ‘The Big Breakfast’ ... and I am a Cadbury’s Fruit and Nut addict!

In one sentence, why should the tribe elect you Chief?

I have an enormous amount of energy, passion and experience to give the Island .. and I know that the experience will teach me a lot, allowing me to apply these learning’s to my life going forward …. I truly hope that you offer me this gift.

Hi Elaine! Welcome to the tribe. It’s great to see you’re heading to Vorovoro so soon and applying for March chief despite having just joined. Good luck!

Bula sia, Elaine!
So cool you’re throwing yourself into this. You a windsurfer?? Maybe you should build a couple of traditional Fijian outriggers on island (Takia). Yeah, it’s a bit of a personal quest for me to see some built… shameless plug

Good luck with the chiefdom!

Thanks for the comments! they are appreciated :) I am a throw my self in (or out ;) whole-heartedly kind of person .. the chief position seemed open and it was suggested as I was going, maybe I should apply? ..so why not! If people think I can offer something then great – if not then it will still be a truly amazing experience that I want to get immersed in :) Yes I windsurf (Dehab, Vass)I’d love to be a lot better than I am .. Too itchy feet to sit still for long :) Fijian outriggers huh? .. Ill start researching ;)

Since Susan and I are arriving on the Island March 3, we have a vested interest in who is Chief of the Realm. I’ve shared a few e-mails with Elaine and her enthusiasm for the job would seem to be just what the Island needs.
As we are comtemplating a woman as “Chief” here in the States, let’s see what Elaine can do for Vorovoro
