Raising money ... you view?

I was told that if I am elected as chief, I would be given a small amount of money to spend on the island.

I was asked what would I like to spend it on … ?

A good question indeed. Especially as I’ve not visited and seen what is needed.

I’ve pondered it for a while now… and the answer is id like to spending it on helping to turn the small amount of money into a large amount :)

??But how? ??

When I joined TribeWanted, I wanted to leave work and go to the island for a couple of months. But as this was quite a big step (even though it’s a short stay) I wanted to be sure… so I canvassed lots of opinions of people who had visited the island, to make sure that I was doing the right thing.

And I was overwhelmed by the responses that came back from loads of Tribe members who were kind enough to take the trouble and time out of their day to reply …

And one thing is clear.

If you visit the island, it will make a profound and lasting impression on you. Everyone seemed elated by their experience – not one single person had even tiniest negative thing to say. Everyone seemed to feel so very proud and privileged to part of such a project – to have ‘contributed’ to the island and community.

So many people asked me to remember them and say hello from them to local tribe members.. their forever friends.
So, that got me thinking.

There are many thousands of members who contribute brilliantly on-line but because of money, or family, work commitments or personal circumstance, they will never be able to visit the island. But perhaps they would like an opportunity to feel a closer link and make a mark actually on the island.

??So. My idea. ??

We give all members, irregardless of whether they have visited or not, the chance to purchase a ‘dedication tag’.

This would be displayed in the Great Bure and would display their name, a date, and either a message or dedication to a person at home or on the island. A permanent mark.

This could create a ‘Wall of Support’ from tribe members and friends of the island, with all of the metal tags (or what ever the eco friendly version would be ;) displayed for future visitors to read.

The money could directly help fund projects.

For people who never get to the island, this would be a low cost but powerful way to send a little part of them over to the VoroVoro. For people who have visited, they can leave knowing that they have left their mark, not only in terms of the hands on help they have directly given, but with a personal message – on the Wall of Support.

If 2,000 people (less than half the current base) bought a ‘Dedication Tag’ that cost perhaps £10 – with say 75% going directly to fund projects (after costs & admin etc) … it’s a decent additional to the fund pot.

What do you think?

This is a good idea – and maybe it could be adopted by the Dream Foundation as a way to raise money for their projects.

Great idea. I am a jeweller, and may have some ideas to help with the design of making these Tags. They don’t have to be made completely from metal. We could design something that is relatively easy to individualise, and perhaps teach the local people to make (I plan to go to the island for at least 2 weeks). I have a thought on using local wood and materials. I support the idea that after the initial costs, manufacture and admin, the rest of the money goes to the Foundation.

Excellent idea, Elaine. I’d suggest splitting the proceeds between Vorovoro projects and Dream Foundation projects.

Ooh don’t know what happened there.

wanted to say, like it, was thinking about merchandise options today.

Agree with Stingers and it’s be nice to reuse some of the glass or plastic.

I think it’s a great idea but I think 5 would be a better amount to charge. Especially if the materials are found (which i think is more in keeping with the ethos of the island).
