YOUR MAD !

Michelle Crouch By Crouchy, Hertfordshire, UK Posted 25 Feb 2008

Yep thats what all my friends & family have said about me going to Tribewanted, well with the exception of Maz & baz who have watched the show..oh & Dom who thought this was the greatest thing I will ever do in my life…on the other hand I pretty much got a blank expression from the rest.
Then at 28 yrs of age I have my mother giving me the speech of “right I want an address and phone number of where your staying”....she just wasnt getting this at all !, I felt like I was 11 again asking to stay at a friends house for the night, so after she highlighted all the best parts about me travelling on my own, like getting being held hostage or killed…I wont go into the rest it got far to gory, I told her to watch the show and stop with the silly stories, she seemed slightly reassured that I might be ok.
So yeah I have finally plucked up the courage, (after much talking about this) to travel half way round the world on my own, this is a first for me and I have a HUGE HUGE fear of flying, so I think sedation is my only way of getting through the flight..
I saw the show, checked out the website and thought yep I like this a lot and thought i need to check this place out for myself and learn some new life skills from others, so my Island time (8wks) is booked and I am heading to the island on the 21st June thats if I have not died of my own fear of flying….if your out on the island at the same time,it would be good to hear from you

Michelle, that’s exactly what my mum said about me when we said we’d signed up. And that was before TW had even leased Vorovoro! She’s changed her tune a bit now and I bet your mum will too.

Well done Michelle. Maybe your mum should call mine – it was my mum that watched the programme and told me I should go! My house is on the market and as soon as I get a bite on it I’ll be over. If it all works out then I should be ouy in May or June for 8 weeks. Don’t worry about the flying bit, it’s part of the experience and I am sure you will be sat next to someone who would be happy to hear about your adventure. Well done you.

Good stuff michelle, looking forward to meet you! Why not encourage your mum to come along as well? Mine’s coming in may, she’s 63 and never been this far ever.

Hey Michelle, don’t worry about the flying, you’ll be so bored and tired after the first bit you really won’t care anymore! I’m the same and find ‘Rescue Remedy’ spray by Nelson Bach takes the edge off – you can get it in boots i think and it’s a herbal style spray that calms you a bit – the best thing is it’s natural so you can have it every ten mins if you fancy and it’s in a grape alcohol solution so tastes a bit yummy! Grab yourself a bottle, you’ll treasure it forever : )

Its reassuring to a similar reaction to my mother’s when I told her I was thinking of travelling halfway across the world on my own. I have yet to defy her and sign up, but I’m seriously thinking of coming in June. How did you get her to change her mind? No amount of persuading has reassured my mum that it is unlikely that anything will happen to me!

Not sure how old you are Emily but Michelle is 28 and certainly by that age a mum should be able to let the apron strings loosen. Is it your first long haul trip? There are certain precautions you can take as a travelling female, this may make her feel a bit better. Points of contact for example,i.e the Labasa internet cafe if your mum is email literate. Maybe other members can elaborate too on safety ideas.

Thanks Joyce, anything that will reassure her would be welcome. I am 22, and this would be my first long haul trip. This is my last free summer before I start a job,so I wanted to do something exciting, I have spent every other summer working to raise money to live off for the next uni term. None of my friends are persuadable, and most of them have done the travelling before, so its me on my lonesome! But I thought I would meet some great people on the island anyway, its looks like everyone has an amazing time.

Hi Emily – I agree with Joyce – it seems too like this is not really travelling by yourself, because there will be people with you every step of the way. It’s only Fiji! It’s not like you’re going to the deepest Colombian jungle to grapple with kidnappers…

I’m 28 years old from New Zealand. I travelled by myself to live in Canada when I was 19 and I’ve now been to France, Sicily, Andorra, Ireland, Hong Kong, Singapore and Australia. Compared to most New Zealanders, I haven’t really travelled all that much! I guess my frame of reference is that everyone in NZ travels heaps because we are so far away from the rest of the world. So we want to get out and see it. I think this is a good attitude wherever your home country is situated, if of course you are fortunate enough to have the funds!

I think it’s all about perspective. And of course once you’ve been down this end of the world, your Mum won’t be able to get you back! Don’t tell her that though :p

Any travel will make you a better and happier person, which any Mum should want for their daughter. Just book the ticket and tell her after you’ve done it – that’s what I did with my Canada trip as I knew my Mum would be a bit sad. And she didn’t disown me! Of course…

Good luck to everyone who has to overcome something to get to Vorovoro – might see some of you there!

Emily would your mum be happier if you found a companion from the TW site to travel with? just a thought

Michelle Crouch By Crouchy, Hertfordshire, UK Posted Feb 26, 2008 8:31pm

Emily I am out on the island from June for 8 weeks, time to do what you want not what your mother says, like everyone says you will be fine, I only mentioned my mum in my blog because she cracks me up, yeah she is a little nervy about me going buts thats life, you have to live it!

Walter Flood By Walt, Illinois, USA Posted Feb 26, 2008 9:36pm

Good stuff, here. Totally jealous about all of you guys being able to go for 8 weeks though!! You will all gain so much from the experience – who knows, maybe you’ll be the next Kimbo and end up there until the end of the project!

James Baldock By James Baldock, Kent, UK Posted Feb 26, 2008 9:45pm

Good on you Michelle!

I had the same ‘you’re crazy’ reactions from some of my friends. They couldn’t understand why I would want to travel half way around the world to help build a community when I could ‘come round mine and build a conservatory!’. Some people! :0)

A few years ago I went to Paris for two weeks on my own. Traveling on your own is a great thing to do if you have the opportunity and gives you a wonderful feeling of achievement, so well done for taking the plunge!

Anyway keep in touch, looks like you’ll be on the island at the same time as me (2 – 16 August). Bring it on!

Coco By Tui Nui (King Coconut), Wiltshire, UK Posted May 10, 2008 10:16pm

looks like i will see you on the Island Michelle, same as James Baldock 2-16th August.

I will want to hear all about the flights!

Good Luck!

Giles
