Bula Elizabeth – welcome to the tribe. The only thing you need to contribute is enthusiasm.
As to the cost – the expensive bit is the flight over. The cheapest will be about £800-900 – try Air New Zealand as a good starting point. Then you need to get from Nadi (where you fly in to) to Labasa which if I remember right is about £30-£40. You will need to buy some kava for your welcome ceremony (about £10) and a sulu (dead cheap, a couple of quid). When you’re on the island you can spend as much or as little as you choose – absolutely nothing if you want, but you’ll probably want to pay for a couple of boat trips (about £3 each?), buy stuff in Labasa (alcohol, maybe water, sweets, some souvenirs) and maybe get yourself a customised sulu from one of the Mali tribe (about £5, I think).
