Will I come? Not sure I can...

Neil Morgan By Neil Morgan, Lanarkshire, Scotland Posted 05 Sep 2008

Hi Guys

The time is almost upon me, when I embark on the trip of a lifetime. It’s all booked and paid for.

However, I’m not sure I’ll be able to come now.

When I booked in January I hoped upon hope that the Internet side of things would get sorted out before my trip.

You see, I run a web-based business and I simply cannot leave it for 3 weeks.

How is the Internet connection looking? Any updates?

Do I have any options? One thing I considered doing was buying a Vodafone pre-pay data SIM in Labasa that I could take to the island and use in my teeny laptop (bought for the trip!). But Vodafone in Fiji did not reply to my emails.

Is there any hope? Not sure.

Cheers,

Neil

Hey Neil

I run the business from the island and can get slow internet connection through a vodaofone toggle. I go to town 2 days a week to catch up and then work offline the rest of the time.

But to be honest if your coming to Vorovoro you really don’t want to be worrying about business.

How about splitting your weeks in half and spending time in the middle in Suva catching up?

Hi Ben

Thanks for getting back to me!

But to be honest if your coming to Vorovoro you really don’t want to be worrying about business.

Ah, I remember those heady days well. If only they lasted forever!

What kind of Vodafone SIM do you have? Is it a Fiji one? Pay As You Go? Would I be able to get one in Fiji?

I thought about going to Suva midweek catching up but was afraid that the trip would be overbooked and I wouldn’t be able to go.

Sorry about all the questions – it’s just coming down to the practical realities now.

Cheers,

Neil

Really hope a solution can be found for you Neil.

Hi Jay

I hope so. For me, as a full-time Internet business owner, this is the ultimate goal – to be able to run my business from almost anywhere on the planet – including an island in the Pacific!

For me, it’s never been about a different kind of holiday.

It takes all sorts!

Cheers,

Neil

Surprisingly Ben manages to run his business from VV with visits into Labasa. Not sure how much more intensive yours would be, only you guys can know that.
Suva is the bigger city with regular flights from Labasa 40 mins by air.
Good luck
Jay

Neil Hi

If Ben can manage to run TW surely you can get round being there and keeping in touch with your company? Don’t not go!! It seems to me that once there you’ll find a solution? Anyway I really hope that you go as it is so expensive cancelling as well as a terrible shame to miss the experience!!

Hi Avril

Ben uses a mobile contract supplied free by Vodafone. That option isn’t open to me.

10 minutes ago I emailed Vodafone in Fiji (again) and hope they reply this time.

Oh Avril, I really wish I could get this sorted. I’m sure you understand where I’m coming from with this. The ‘oh forget it’ option simply doesn’t work for me.

Cheers,

Neil

So you are still trying to solve your dilemma Neil. I really feel for you and totally understand.

Neil
I guess no positive reply from Vodaphone then.

Why is Ben making it sound as if you can manage as he does if he has a tool you can’t use Neil? “Ben uses a mobile contract supplied free by Vodafone. That option isn’t open to me.”

BEN .. can’t you sort something out? Seems to me that losing potential visitors unnecessarily isn’t best practice?? I may not know the ins and outs of course but would like to know what the problem with working on a solution for Neil is.

Neil Morgan By Neil Morgan, Lanarkshire, Scotland Posted Sep 11, 2008 9:55pm

I heard from Vodafone Fiji today and they don’t offer data SIMs on anything other than monthly contract.

In other words, as I suspected, I can’t buy a pay-as-you-go data SIM for my laptop.

Bother!

From previous correspondence, I know that Ben dearly wishes that the online and offline Vorovoro worlds could be better connected. I think the technical challenges have been substantial.

When I booked in January there was a lot of discussion in the forums about setting up a wireless network on the island. I offered to pay for some of it – now you know why!!!

However, there was some resistance to the plan and, for whatever reason, it never happened.

As a full-time Internet business person, feeding 4 kids, a wife and a mortgage from online pursuits, my visit to Vorovoro was never just another holiday. It was about connecting my online and offline lives in the same way as Ben has done with Tribewanted.

So, I’m going to postpone my booking. I’ll then have 14 days in reserve and may use them next year.

Cheers,

Neil

Woops, 3 kids, not 4!

Avril Fletcher By Avril Fletcher, Devon, England Posted Sep 12, 2008 7:11pm

Freudian slip you think??? the ‘4’ I mean!

Glad you are still planning a trip Neil.

Joyce Ward By Jay, Essex, UK Posted Sep 12, 2008 7:22pm

Sound reasoning Neil, can’t argue with that. Lets hope you do make it next year.

Good Luck

Hi Avril/Jay

Freudian slip you think??? the ‘4’ I mean!

NO, NO, NO!!!!!!!!

Now you two, make sure by the time I get there, there is some decent Internet access!!

Cheers,

Neil
