Daniel Mason's August 2008 Chief Manifesto

Why would I like to be Chief?

Apart from the words of Sosi (team Fiji member) “you get 4 weeks free nd your own bure” I would also like to be Chief to get to know team Fiji even btter than I have and to look further into their culture and practises.

What, other than my skills, makes me the right person for the job?

By the time August arrives I’ll have been on Vorovoro for 2 months and during that time I’ll have worked closely with both the chiefs and getting involved in every way I can. I have developed strong relationships with team Fiji and have learnt what is possible working in a different environment like this remote desert island, according to Pupu “nothing is hard in this world”.

What would I achieve as chief?

I’ve been conversing with the Fijians and the tribe about what they need and here are my propositions:-
  • Showers – Building new showers in a good location with the best type of system.
  • Keeping the online community up to date through online decision makings on current affairs.
  • Expanding the pig pen – The pigs are getting bigger and therefore need somewhere bigger to live.
  • Beds for the new Vale – This will compliment the new floor that has being recently installed.
  • Storage in the kitchen – With tribe members on the island increasing storage space in the kitchen is becoming limited.
  • Ongoing maintence of current buildings – This would include the bamboo walling and roofing.

As chief, I will be given a small pot of money with which to leave my legacy. How will I spend it?

A few ideas to spend this small pot of money to leave my legacy would be:-
  • Update the ecotricity hut to meet the demand of increasing numbers of tribe members on the Island at any given time.
  • Create a new or update the existing photo collage of Vorovoro and its members.
  • Increase water collection by utilize the currently unused roofs such as the Family Bure and the New Vale.

Tell us something interesting about yourself…

I won Young Chef of the Year 2004 for Milton Keynes compeing against 3 catering students and someone who already worked within a kitchen (usefull for naked Sunday).

In one sentence, why should I be chief?

Dan the man by name, Dan the man by nature.

I arrived on the same day as Dan and after spending a month on the island with him I can think of noone better to take on the role of August chief, he will make a big difference and continue the good work he has already initiated and carried out.

Dan, so delighted you are running for Chief!! When Luke and I met you on Fraser Island and told you about this mad thing in Fiji that we had found out about called tribewanted you probably thought we were crazy!

I think we talked you into a bit but after getting to know you and spending an amazing time on the island ourselves we knew you would like it! You will make a fantastic chief and do all the tribemembers of proud. Just wish we could be there to enjoy it with you !! Best of Luck !

Go for it Dan! I really admired how committed you were to the island and helping out with everything, and I think you would make a fantastic chief. Good Luck!

Dan, so glad you decided to go for Chief. Those of you who don’t know him can trust me when I say he is a passionate and committed Tribie, works really hard and has learnt loads on Vorovoro (as do we all). Good luck Daniel. xx

Ive had the privilege of spending many weeks with Dan on the island. In short he will make a fantastic chief, he has mastered many island tasks and has the confidence of the Fijians. All the best buddy.

I am wondering how someone can stay on the island for 2 months when there was a vote that 4 weeks in a row was a maximum for non staff?

LIMITATION OF ISLAND STAYS: Members are not permitted to remain on the island for more than 4 weeks in a row. If a member stays for the 4 week maximum, there must be a minimum of a 4 week gap before they can return. 55.3% No / 44.7% Yes
There was a post mortem of this vote. It can be read here:

Is the island doing what it wants and ignoring our rules or what`?

Oh…duh… I suppose I should learn to read figures better… it lost, that’s why.

So, all’s well that ends well.

Vote Dan, i know him and have no doubt that he is absolutely the man for the job…

Jenni Bannister By Seini, Middlesex, UK Posted Jul 7, 2008 12:25pm

Vote Dan! Absolutely, he’s a committed and dedicated little tribey. He may be a youngen but he’s got a good head on his shoulders and I’m rearranging flights to come back in July and knowing Dan will be there makes me so happy as he would make an incredibly capable chief. He really gets involved and the tribe (both Fijian and Foreign) love him.

Dan the Man all the way x
