As many of you will be well aware, the word coming from recent visitors to Vorovoro is that it’s time to re-think our showering situation. Go here for the full discussion that is taking place in the forums.

The island team has proposed a choice of two locations for a new shower block. Here are the details on the final two proposed locations for the showers:

Option 1

One proposed location is next to the large water tank on the hill behind the village.

Pros: Directly above gardens for grey water collection, has sun and good breeze to hopefully keep mozzies away, near existing water source. No trees nearby that will shade the site now or in the future.

Cons: Requires building stairs and visitors to walk up stairs [solar showers available for elderly and disabled], requires a modification to the current reed bed, not central to village area.

Option 2

Another proposed location is behind the new vale and inland of the volleyball court.

Pros: Has sun [keep away mozzies], central to village accommodations, easily accessible [no stairs].

Cons: Requires building a new reed bed, water is treated but not recycled unless carried to gardens.

Please see these photos and video posted about the two locations.

The cost of building showers at these two proposed locations will not differ by much, but it will take a bit more time to construct the showers on the hill.

I like the sound of option 2. Thank you for putting it altogether Atami.

I haven’t quite understood how much in a thoroughfare the showers by the vale would be? Would the area around the showers get sodden or will there be good drainage away? And privacy?

When it is said that the showers on the hill would be away from the main village – how far are we talking about? Walking wise? And somebody mentioned the possible damage of very high winds – is this a relevant danger?

Would the access to the top of the hill be able to go in front for the loos?

This is for us TWers who have not yet been to VV!!! Please.

Hi Avril,

The proposed location on the hill (not even a real hill!) is about 30 seconds’ walk away from the camp. There is a path up behind the toilets.

The location right next to the vale is slap bang in the middle of camp.

Check out the forum :)

Is it possible to keep the showers where they are now for those of us who don’t mind them and tend to stay at that end of the camp if you go with option 2? What I don’t agree with on Option 2 is the water is ot recycled unless carried to the gardens. Water is very heavy to carry and I have doubts about how much that Vale location water will get used to the gardens based on current participations in the gardens or at least that I saw in May. Perhaps Ben or Mariah could anser that? Vinaka! Liz

Ili,

I think option 2 would be useful for water if we diversify the garden somewhat and utilize sunnier areas in and around the bures for smaller – more inviting and more easily tended – garden plots within the village.

does the shower system differ in each option, or do they work the same way?

Is it planned for water to be recycled in option 1?

Does the location of the shower (Option 1 or 2) affect the amount of water collected?

Can soap, shampoo etc be used in the shower?

Thanks, Carol, that was very helpful and actually a great idea to put more gardens nearby!! A lot of people seem to think it’s a far away distance to go help in the gardens. And Nick, those are excellent questions to make decision. Look forward to hearing the answers. Hannah, you know I love ya, but I don’t see how option two can be smack in the middle of the camp. To my mind and looking at the map, both options are at either end of TW’s main base. (I realize there are a few tents and huts outside of permiter of kitchen to volleyball court but that’s what I consider the main base since the majority sleep there. I tend to go with the expert Ben’s plan altho am realistic that people may think going up stairs is a hassle until they get there, see that it’s really not and (hopefully) realize that don’t use the shower every day because they have the sea. Last year during dry season, Bengazi asked folks to limit showers to one per week. These are the realities of Vorovoro and the experiment. Vinaka!

“Would the access to the top of the hill be able to go in front for the loos?”

I’m leaning towards the showers being on the hill from reading but can someone confirm that access will be made to go infront of the loos and not behind?

Oh and by the way is it possible to put where the current showers are on the map above?

Kate Walker By Kate Walker, Merseyside, UK Posted Jul 15, 2008 6:56pm

Avril, I think that the current showers would be at the cross if you drew a line to the left from the toilet and down from the #1. Does that make sense?! I hope so!

Avril Fletcher By Avril Fletcher, Devon, England Posted Jul 15, 2008 10:44pm

Kate – I’m not sure where the toilet is!!
But someone has added a ‘C’ is that the spot?

Adam Carter By Atama, NSW, Australia Posted Jul 16, 2008 1:59am

‘C’ is for Current shower location … approximately, that is

Keep in mind that the locations marked on the above map, are very rough and are subject to change

Avril Fletcher By Avril Fletcher, Devon, England Posted Jul 16, 2008 5:02pm

great – thanks for the current shower location Adam – I wouldnt have guessed!!

I like the idea that the locations on the map are subject to change!!! Hurricane? Storm? :o)

Let’s cross our fingers that we’ve seen the last of the hurricans! ;)

What I mean is that the locations marked are just my interpretation of the two locations. I’m sure they’re not exactly right, but they should be pretty close

Avril Fletcher By Avril Fletcher, Devon, England Posted Jul 17, 2008 6:53pm

Hee Hee I realised that!!

I didn’t post my last post three hours ago though – sometime yesterday i think!! somehow this thread has got out of sync I think,
