Water storage

So, looks like the dry season is mostly behind us. As we take steps to prepare for the rainy season, we should also consider how our actions now will effect the island when the rains stop again. It would be great if the prospect of a water shortage never came up and it’s something that with the right planning we can achieve. Right now we have just barely enough water storage to meet our drinking and cooking needs but nowhere near enough for bathing and the gardens. One option that has been thrown around is to build another cement water tank or to put in another plastic one. For those of you who are familiar with permaculture or integrated design, you will remember that the best solutions or elements of a design are able to solve more than one problem. No matter how we go about it, increasing our water capacity will be a big project and it would be great to integrate it into the design of the village so that it can serve multiple functions. Something that I have seen used before and I think we should look into is what is called a natural swimming pool. here is a good article that describes how to build one.

One of the local Peace core volunteers is working to help start aquaculture (fish farming) projects in the area which would be another good use for the pool. (It should eliminate the mozzie larve too). He has given us some steps that we can take to determine if we have the proper soil and from there we can hash out a plan.
