Anouncing the Tribewanted University design challenge
Tuesday night, as I walked down the beach to my hut after the grog session I looked up at the crystal clear sky and found myself completely transfixed by the stars. I have been in many places with what must have been equally clear skies, but for some reason, that night, I felt as though I was seeing them for the first time. I thought, “oh, so this is what stars look like.”
Yesterday afternoon I was sitting in the new Good Times Bar and Grill in Labasa with a group of Peace Core representatives. Obama had just delivered his acceptance speech. As the sun set I stepped outside to call my family. None of us could ever remember feeling emotional over the outcome of an election before. Thinking about it still brings tears to my eyes. As I spoke with my dad I thought “oh, so this is what it feels like to dare to hope.” I have wanted to feel proud to be an American for so long, and the idea that that may now become possible is overwhelming.
I had been working all day on cleaning up the information on our first Tribewanted University design challenge. And with this newfound hope I am happy to announce that we will now be accepting applications.
Tribewanted University is introducing a new competition to design tools, micro environments, integrated systems, and other sustainable solutions to environmental challenges. A winning design will be one that is appropriate to the local environment on the island of Vorovoro and, fits in with and even strengthens Fijian culture. Special attention should also be placed on the ease with which the design can be implemented and replicated in Fiji. For all the information please go to…

Surely Alan with his wind turbine has to be a candidate
Ben – this is in response to your Obama comments, rather than the design challenge. I just have to echo your sentiments. Having left the US after “W” stole the first election, I can’t express the relief that I feel following this election. I sobbed through his acceptance speech, and have cried many times since then, when the topic of the Obama Presidency comes up or I just think about it. Maybe the US will stop feeling so foreign with this renewed sense of optimism and hope, and with the renewal of interest in participation in government that Obama has generated.
