Gifts

Will Pullen By Will Pullen, Cambridgeshire, UK Posted 20 Aug 2008

Bula!

Im really not sure what to bring as a gift both for the school and for the tribe. Ive read some of the other blogs and topics and dont want to bring something that would be totally useless for the island. I really dont want to present something and have everyone thinking “What a piece of junk.”.
Any help would be appreciated!

the island needs solar showers! They aren’t too expensive and you can typically find them at any camping store. showers are being built now on the hill for when we have enough freshwater, but saltwater solar showers on the beach and great to use with biodegradeable products. Wind up torches are a great gift for the island too.

The school can use any supplies for schoolwork or playing outside (rugby balls, netball, football, etc.). You can get creative for school gifts!

Msg me if you want any more info!

Cheers,
Mariah

Bula Will,

I left the island a week ago and asked the very same question before I left.

One tribe member told me to bring some solights to the camp – solar powered lights that work well to light up vale enterances and night as well as the walk-ways. They cost about $12 US each and didn’t take up too much space in my back-pack.

When we went to visit the school in Mali – one gift was VERY popular – a bag of colored balloons – the kids loved them and lined up for them. Only draw back is they end up as trash that is not very biodegradable.

Colored pencils or chalk for the blackboard were also popular.

I read that they have quite a few books for the older children and could use more for the younger ones – think grade/form 1 and 2.

Mariah hit the nail on the head with anything Rugby – they all love that game – even most of the girls ran out to play while we were there. I’m not very familiar with rugby – but it seems like they could use more balls and the stands that hold them so the kids can practice kicking (hope that makes sense).

Cheers,
Marie

one thought that i had is that the school doesn’t have any good fun science kits. so, perhaps instead of more sports stuff or art supplies, you could get some of those fun kits where you can make a clock battery run off a potato (or dalo), or something where they can grow “magic rocks” out of crystal solution…? just a random thought.

Will, you have asked exactly what I was thinking!! I am arriving on sat 30th aug and was planning on taking some footballs/rugby balls, couple of kicking tees, colouring books and colouring pencils for younger kids. If there is anything else that is required on the island or if the above items are already in plentiful supply it would be great to know!!

Hey guys! Ive just found this project and it seems awesome! Hope you think of something good to take, maybe skipping ropes, frisbies or ‘fun’ sunscreen (th coloured ones you can paint on!) might be fun and wont take up alot of space!
