Mali Women's Fair Trade Cooperative a success!

For the past month, we’ve been visiting the 3 villages on Mali, alternating villages each week, after our Friday Mali School visit. And I’m so pleased to say it’s been a success!

The Mali ladies have really come through with some beautiful pieces, from mats, wall hangings, purses, jewelry, and much more, as well as welcoming us with the usual Fijian hospitality – a nice mat in the shade to rest, some tea, and some delicious Fijian baked sweets. The majority of the crafts are made from materials found on or around the island – mangrove seeds, bamboo, voivoi leaves, coconut, shells. The tribe have been very happy with this new addition to our Friday school adventure. A highlight has been when we walk home from school through the jungle with the children. Though a bit tired and hungry from playing sports with the children at the school, the tribe has unanimously told me it was all worth it. The tribe appreciates the opportunity to buy authentic Fijian gifts and momentos, and see exactly where their money is going. Smiles on faces and treasures in hands, each week we come back to Vorovoro tired, but content.

As for me, it feels good to provide another way to bring the two cultures together to share and mutually benefit. I hope this is the just the beginning!

Sota tale,

Mama Jenny
