Michael Finch's May 2009 Chief Manifesto
Why would I like to be Chief?
I first became aware of Tribewanted when I saw it advertised on TV, I followed it through its next stages and kept updated online as regularly as I could. I was in full support of the project and its ideas, believing it could work. There and then I decided I would visit Vorovoro, when and how I did not know, at this stage it was only a dream. When I decided to go traveling, my initial plans where to only visit Australia and New Zealand because of money and time constraints. However due to unforeseen circumstances the option of traveling to Fiji became plausible, two weeks later the dream became reality. I would like to be Chief as I enjoy taking the lead role and feel I flourish when working as part of a great team of enthusiastic people. It is a once in a lifetime opportunity, and as hard as it may be, it will be even more rewarding.
What other than my skills makes me the right person for the job?
As I am already present on the island and in contact with the current chief it makes for a gentle transition and handover of roles. This will cause minimal disturbance to both the tribe and team Fiji. I am young energetic and focused, making sure any job I start I see it through to the end, leading by example. I am very approachable making it easy to chat, allowing for good communication between everyone involved on the island.
What would I achieve as Chief?
Tui Mali is kindly donating some pigs as a gift to the island, so as Chief, one of the ongoing projects will be to build a secure pen for them to live in. The pigs will be used for collecting and converting the waste into bio-gas as well as providing the island with useful fertilizer. Some will eventually be used for the major celebrations and ceremonies that are to follow in the future months, for example the islands 3rd birthday. This will be a major focus point for the tribe and gives them a great chance to get involved with the projects. On certain days we could run a gathering/cultural class through the island collecting and learning about available food for the pigs to eat.
Some people from Mali are cutting some reeds for re-thatching the family bure roof, this has been delayed due to weather conditions but will resume asap.
Tell us something interesting about yourself?
I love running and used to compete, running for the south-west at my age group. I am also taking part in the London marathon next year. (mainly to win a £10 bet with my friend.)
In one sentence why should I be chief?
So I can further develop and strengthen the important relationship between the tribe and team Fiji.
