School celebrations

Last Wednesday, we went to the Mali School for the children’s graduation and prize giving. I think it was Class 8 that graduated from the Mali School to the Labasa College. And the kindergartners graduated to Class 1. It was very enjoyable. There was grog, and a lot of speeches from the teachers. Tui Mali was there, as well as Keresone. He is an American, like me. He works for the Peace Corp and is living in Nakawaqa for 2 years. We will be here for one of those years with him, and I hope to become closer friends with him.
After the prize ceremony, it was time to eat. There was chicken curry, rice, and this noodle dish with beef and vegetables in it. It was very good! I saw my friend Sala from Nakawaqa. I hadn’t seen her since we’ve been back. I was very glad to see her. She’s very fun. She has 7 younger siblings. The youngest, Tomasi, was graduating from Kindergarten to Class 1.
Today we only have 1 tribe member, but tomorrow we will have 5. I like it when new tribe members come because I like meeting new people. I like making new friends, and learning about all the places they’ve been, where they are from, and where they are going next.
I am very excited because today I am going for an overnight at my friends’ house. There is Mana, Lavenya, Ratu, Junior, and Joey. My younger brother Oliver and I are going with their to Mana’s graduation, and then sleeping at their house. I like going to their house because in their village there are lots of other children. It’s very fun there. We like to play a coin game where you guess which side you think it will be, heads or tails, and if you are right you get a point. Whoever gets to 10 points first gets to flip the coin next. And guess what? They also have a TV that they watch DVD’s on!

Hi Bethy,
Great blog!! You’re a pro already. I’m glad you’ve managed to catch with so many of your friends already and adjusting to island life is getting easier.
Dance in the rain for me, pick some wonderful shells and have a hearty helping of pawpaw curry!
Big hug, miss you all.
