What are you? ...Chicken?

Hi fellow Tribies

We had a lot of fun last couple of weeks finishing off the Poultry towers (recommend you check out the excellent You Tube video Jim put together http://www.tribewanted.com/blogs/tv/2437). It went from the ridiculous upwards to become the cutting edge in housing for chickens…a sort of ‘gated community’ if you will. Jess was our chief engineer and I discovered she is a closet carpenter in there somewhere and Jenny continues to amaze me with her culinary skills that can even turn chicken pellets into savoury delights that made my mouth water. While the chickens commented that the structure was “wicked”, the Fijians just shook their heads in amazement. They’ve never seen any chicken pen in Fiji that features split level housing, shingled roof, it’s own branch of the Hammock society, a sun deck, landscaped surroundings and a sports gym.

I clipped one wing on each of the girls to stop them taking their extra freedom too far. I wonder if they’ve had any breakouts since I’ve been away? We filled their house with a lot of dry straw to encourage them to lay their eggs there. Chickens normally gravitate towards a cool dark area with lots of spongy stuff when it comes time to drop an egg. These particular ladies are doing very well and often drop an egg each every day…I’ve even noticed occasionally that they can drop two, something I didn’t believe was possible.

Later on, we’ll put some sticks from the walls up to an apex in the trees that grow in the middle of the pen and grow passion fruit vines up those.

Anyway one of these days we’ll have to get back to some real work.
