My second time to Moscow was planned to be a normal trip for me, get in, get drunk, go out, get back before my 12 hour rule runs out, then sleep and get up for my wake-up call.
This time everything followed suite to the letter till after I got ready to check out and turned on the tv.
I didnt remember what television in Russia was like. I hadnt been interested when I was cleaning the bottle vodka with a fellow crew mate in my rooom the previous night. Conversation included everything but the local tv channels.
So I sat there with my 2nd cup of coffee flicking through the channels searching for an English speaking channel. I suddenly stumbled upon the news channels talking about British Airways union proposal for a strike over christmas along with the global warming summit in Coipenhagen…or whatever it was…..
Then my attention was drawn on to the sea and the beach on the BBC Entertainment cheannel. At first I thought how beautiful it looked, then I thought it looked so much like home, then it suddenly struck me that BBC was actually filming in Fiji!
I watched for 45 mins till I had to get downstairs and check out or the crew would have been calling me for me to run down. It wasnt like Air Pacific where we can just check out on the last minute and make the rest of the crew wait for you in the bus, no, this was a REAL international airline where time was time and Fiji time didnt exist in the least bit sense of it.
The segment I watched was of when Ben received the letter from the Inland Revenue dept and how they wanted him (or the comapny) to pay over a million FJD $.
Rediculous! I kept watching till Ben was about to leave Fiji and he received another letter from the Fiji “taxman” demanding him to stay.
I was drawn to the story from the very begining.
But what amazed me was that I was watching this on Russian television in Moscow, on a British news channel about Fiji. Temepratuire outside was -25 degrees celsius and the room aircon temperature was placed at 35 degrees celsius.
