bula sia from the new marama!

So, my first official Blog-type thing as Marama on good ol’ Vorovoro; and a busy week it has been!!

So we started out the week with a Chilled out Monday; me Rob and Simone took to snorkeling / swimming round the island with gusto; making it around the top of the island into deep and misty waters. All feeling a bit spooked (though i would be the only one to admit it) we decided to power towards Tanoa park and then walk back to camp. I stopped to look up and saw a hilarious sight which made my day; Rob swimming his little heart out..in the complete wrong direction out towards the horizon and Labasa!!

Tuesday was busier, with possibly the most hilarious Meke practice (Namani and Jone teaching the Girls meke!!..they did look very pretty though ;)) Then lots of Kava, Talinoa and muisc for the rest of the day for Sevusevu with Tui Mali.

Wednesday was a hectic town trip, and a chilled out games night in the evening, playing ‘the chocolate game’ and ‘mosquito’ until everyone was hurting from laughter!

Thursday after the success of the last one, we set up another ‘eco scavenger hunt,’ to find and collect rubbish along the beach which had been washed up. We split into two teams and there were points allocated for number of bags, weight, and things like ‘matching pairs of flip flops.’ We had a brilliant time running around the island trying to beat the other team to it, and managed to collect many rice sacks full of rubbish.

On our way back to the camp with our bounty, I was passing bags over some rocks, when my foot started to slip…luckily, there was a branch hanging just above my head so I grabbed it to steady myself, unfortunately, the branch proceeded to snap under my weight resulting in me falling into the water, while the branch hit me on the head!!! a hilariously painful fall which had us laughing right up until Jimmy also managed to slip off the next rock and fall into the sea!! to top it all off, we got back too late, so the bags we had collected didn’t even count towards the total of our team!

Even so, with Ben and Namani’s help, we still managed to win the competition overall!

As of Friday we have also started to travel to one village on Mali per week, after the school trip, to walk home with the kids, have tea with the ladies and have a chance to shop for some of their handicrafts. We went to Vesi this week, and it was amazing; they had had just 9 days to prepare everything, and there were handbags, fans, place mats, wall hangings, and some beatiful woven roses – I have no idea how they managed to make all of those amazing things in such a short time, but i was awed! and picked myself up a table mat and a lovely fan to keep me cool :D

All in all, a top notch week on Vorovoro!
